93-year-old man hitchhikes to get chocolate for his love amidst coronavirus pandemic

The coronavirus pandemic has changed the way many of us live our lives. Not least is the introduction of stay-at-home measures designed to keep us safe, particularly those who find themselves in risk groups.

Yet one elderly Lake San Marcos man simply couldn’t stay inside if that meant breaking a tradition he and his wife have shared for near on two decades.

As per reports, real estate agent Richard Farmer met 93-year-old Mike Cain last Tuesday hitchhiking near his retirement.

“I paused and I was like, ‘Is that guy hitchhiking?’ So, I made a U-turn, immediately went back and asked him if he was OK,” Farmer said.

It transpired that Mike was on his way to the 99 Cents Only Store – located around 1.5 miles away from where he lived – so that he could buy Hershey’s chocolate bars for the love of his life.

Mike says he and wife Do Jerman have been eating chocolate together every night for almost the past twenty years.

“We don’t eat the whole bar just a couple pieces,” Mike said.

Mike and Rich hit it off during their conversation and so the 93-year-old asked if Rich would be able to take him grocery shopping.

“He’s very unique. I’ve gotten rides before like that but they take me and drop me off. But that Rich, he does it 100%,” Mike said.

“I was amazed, I’m like ‘This guy must really be in love with this gal,'” Farmer said.

As for her husband’s escapades, Do said: “He can go wherever he wants to go, I probably have to send the police after him.”

What a beautiful story of romance and friendship. Mike, thank you for being you. Do sure is a lucky gal!
