It’s fair to say Meghan Markle’s relationship with the Royal Family is pretty icy right now. Although she’s said to have had a great relationship with Prince Philip and the Queen, it seems like things aren’t so rosy between her and Kate and William, at least not now.
From the beginning, Meghan Markle was welcomed with open arms by the Royal Family. William is said to have been very excited about meeting her, but not long after, their relationship started to turn sour.
Even so, Meghan had prepared herself for a tough ride. According to the Pro-Sussex biography Finding Freedom, she was even ready to be “grilled” by William in order to win his approval.
There haven’t been that many reports discussing the relationship between Meghan and Prince William. One could hazard a guess that William likely isn’t too happy about her and Harry speaking out about so many things in the Oprah interview, regardless of what is true and what isn’t.
Meghan’s relationship with William
In the beginning, when Meghan met Harry and started dating, things seemed to be great between the former and the latter’s elder brother.
Authors of the Pro-Sussex biography, Finding Freedom, Omid Scobie and Carolyn Durand, wrote that William and Meghan got “along so well” after their first meeting, as quoted by the Express.
Meghan, however, was nervous about meeting William for the first time. She expected her relationship with him to be “trying” from the off. According to the authors, she “thought that William would no doubt want to know everything about her and her intentions.
“She was self-aware enough to understand that the brothers were wary of women who were more interested in their titles than their wellbeing,” Scobie and Durand wrote in her biography.
“And she couldn’t have come from a more different world than that of William, his wife, and most of their friends.”
A good friend of Meghan told the authors that she prepared herself for a grilling from William. Alas, their first meeting turned out great.
William concerned over Meghan
According to the authors, William told Meghan: “I was looking forward to meeting the girl who has put that silly grin on my brother’s face.”
Even though William appeared to like Meghan initially, he was also concerned. Harry and Meghan’s relationship was moving extremely quickly after a friend set them up on a blind date.
Soon after that date, Harry took Meghan to Botswana, where their relationship really took off. Then, in 2018, the couple tied the knot at St. George’s Chapel at Windsor Castle.
Only a year earlier, William was said to have told his brother: “Take as much time as you need to get to know this girl.”
The authors of Finding Freedom claim that William just wanted to help his brother so that he wasn’t blindsided by infatuation. However, Harry didn’t like his brother’s stance, interpreting the remark from his brother as “snobbish”.
William is also reported to have voiced concerns about how quickly his brother’s relationship was developing, though this was done in private to his aides.
“Desperately wanted her to be happy”
“William soon began to wonder about some of Meghan’s traits and motivations,” a source told the Daily Mail, as revealed by the Express.
“He was worried that at times she seemed to be more concerned about her personal progression or profile over the wider goals and aims of the Royal Family.”
However, William decided to keep those feelings to himself. Why? Because he “desperately wanted her to be happy and appreciated the huge adjustment of entering the Royal Family,” according to the source.
Well, that was at least up to the point when Harry and Meghan decided to leave the Royal Family altogether.
The Oprah Winfrey interview drove a huge wedge of anger between Meghan and Harry and the Royal Family.
The couple spoke freely on many subjects with Oprah, and one that caught the particular attention of William was his brother speaking about their personal relationship.
The Oprah Winfrey interview
Harry said that he thought William was “trapped” inside of the monarchy, and that his brother, as well as other family members, changed their perception of Meghan following their Australia tour.
“I love William to bits. He’s my brother. We’ve been through hell together,” Harry said. “I mean, we have a shared experience. But we … you know, we’re on different paths.”
Harry admitted: “The relationship is space at the moment. And you know, time heals all things hopefully.”
Not only were there many within Buckingham Palace that disliked the fact that Harry and Meghan were leaving their senior roles, but following the interview, it seems as though personal friendships have been broken too. This is particularly significant where Harry, Meghan, William and Kate are concerned.
Royal sources told commentator Dan Wootton that William will “struggle to ever forgive Meghan”, even if Kate’s relationship with Harry is healed.
When Prince Philip passed away, aged 99, many thought that it would offer a chance for Harry and William to start talking and trying to get along. However, things didn’t turn out as well as many had hoped.
Harry ‘outraged’ over meeting
As per reports, a senior royal insider claims that William and Prince Charles met with Harry following the funeral of Prince Philip.
But Harry is rumoured to have been less than satisfied with the meeting.
On the contrary, Harry was ‘outraged’ with the talks. It turns out that the two-hour sit-down at Windsor Castle following the funeral of Philip was unscheduled, and that Harry felt “ambushed” by his father and brother.
“The meeting after the family laid Prince Philip to rest was not scheduled. Harry felt ambushed by his dad and brother which is no way to start a peace process,” a source told Radar Online.
“Now to you negotiate peace with a couple who are willing to burn the whole place down? Harry and Meghan think they are coming to the table in a position of power and they have nothing else to lose,” the source added.
Harry wanted Meghan present
“Everything, from titles to money to security has already been taken away. If the family is serious about making peace they could start by returning everything they removed.”
At the same time as Harry felt “ambushed”, he also felt that it wasn’t the right time for him to talk about the Oprah interview and all the things that had happened with his brother and father.
In fact, he didn’t even want to be there without his wife Meghan Markle present, according to Radar Online.
Meghan Markle stayed in the US because she’s been advised by her physician not to travel. She and Prince Harry are expecting their second child this summer.
Now, it’s important to remember that Meghan and Harry’s relationship with the Royal Family didn’t turn sour just because of the interview. Reports claim that Meghan and her sister-in-law Kate Middleton’s relationship had its struggles for a long time previous. It seems, however, that Meghan going public with the story of how Kate made her cry in the build up to the wedding was the final straw.
William & Kate shocked over Meghan claims
A US Weekly source said that William and Kate were left in “total shock after hearing what Meghan and Harry said”. Another source said that Kate would “never forgive Meghan for throwing shade at her.”
US Weekly further reported that the Royal Family, meanwhile, are having a very tough time moving on from the claims. Harry is said to want them to apologize to Meghan over their treatment of her.
“The problem with Harry is that he’s hooked on being right and regardless of saying he wants to move on from this, he won’t back down until he gets some form of apology from his family,” the source told US Weekly.
Yet it isn’t just Meghan Markle who’s had problems with the Royal Family following their interview with Oprah. Harry’s relationship with his own family – especially with brother William – has been quite damaged.
As for Harry moving on, he’s reportedly just landed his first civilian job, having gotten deals with both Netflix and Spotify alongside wife Meghan. But this is something William thinks is rather detrimental, at least where the Royal Family is concerned.
“William thinks Harry chose fame over family,” royal commentator Christina Garibaldi said as quoted by Express.
“A source tells us that ‘William feels that Harry has got too big for his boots since moving to California and that success and Hollywood has gone to his head.”
It doesn’t look like Harry has gotten too much support from his father either. According to royal expert Angela Levin, Charles won’t be taking Harry’s side at all.
Rather, she says that Charles is planning to “ditch” Meghan and Harry from the Royal Family once he becomes the king.
“Prince Charles has wanted for a very long time to cut the monarchy down to save costs and to make people be worth the money that they got from the taxpayer,” Levin said on TalkRADIO, as quoted by the Express.
Will the relationship between Harry and Meghan and William and Kate ever become healthy again? Or do you think that it is beyond saving?
