Celebrity pictures drawing the attention of the public is nothing new. Take any event from the Hollywood calendar and you’re sure to find at least one image – often several – that has become a talking point for one reason or another.
It was no different at the 2023 American Film Institute Awards earlier this month, where a rather unusual photo of Emily Blunt and Selena Gomez was taken that caused people online to react.
Given the seismic status of the stars in question, it’s no great surprise that there were a deal of photos involving them that surfaced following the event. Yet it didn’t take long for fans and internet denizens to latch onto one image in particular…
The photo in question saw Blunt and Gomez covering their faces (or at least their mouths) from the camera.
Why, you ask? Well, that’s a good question, and one pondered by a lot of people once the image had emerged online.
Making things even more mystifying, the image was later re-posted to Gomez’s Instagram page along with the caption: “We shall not speak lol.”
Fortunately, the real reason behind the peculiar photo has come to light, and it relates to the experiences both actresses had at the Golden Globes over a week ago.
If you followed the aftermath of that awards ceremony you’ll know all about Gomez whispering in Taylor Swift’s ear, and the resulting facial expressions that left fans worldwide desperate to know what they were talking about.
As is often the case, the reality had virtually nothing to do with the rumors that arose. It had been speculated that Gomez was telling Swift about her attempt to take a photo with Timothee Chalamet, only for Kylie Jenner to prevent it from happening.
Gomez, though, clarified that had never taken place. “I told Taylor about two of my friends who hooked up. Not that that’s anyone business,” she explained.
Then there’s A Quiet Place star Emily Blunt, who had to endure gossip suggesting she was having relationship problems with husband John Krasinski.
Footage of the pair standing on the red carpet of the Golden Globes was scrutinized, with some fans claiming to have lip-read that Krasinski had said: “I can’t wait to divorce”.
Unsurprisingly, an insider later confirmed that the pair are not considering a split.
