The death of disgraced financier Jeffrey Epstein has been blamed on a “combination of negligence and misconduct” on the part of a jail guard, a watchdog with the Department of Justice has revealed.
Epstein is said to have taken his own life while in a jail cell in custody in August 2019. The circumstances surrounding his passing have been hotly debated since then, prompting an investigation from the DOJ.
Radar Online now say that the watchdog’s findings included a litany of errors that led to Epstein’s death, including negligence on the part of the jail guards, as well as faulty systems and a failure to follow correct protocol.
Inspector General Michael Horowitz, with the DOJ, reportedly found the Bureau of Prisons were at fault regarding Epstein’s death, through a serious of grievous errors.
Not only was Epstein reportedly left unmonitored for an extended period of time in the New York City federal jail where he was being held before trial, but there were also said to be issues with the facility’s security cameras.
Horowitz also found that Epstein had been given too many bed linens, which he then used to commit suicide in order to avoid going on trial for sex trafficking charges.
Not only that, but the jail, located in Manhattan, failed to assign another cellmate to Epstein after his previous one was moved out, effectively leaving him alone and unsupervised given his aforementioned lack of monitoring.
Horowitz findings come via a 2023 report covering the investigation into Epstein’s death. Following the financier’s passing in 2019, foul play was mentioned often in connection.
Yet the new report appears to put any such notion to bed once and for all, instead highlighting negligence that almost certainly enabled Epstein to take his own life.
According to Horowitz’s report, 13 employees from the facility allegedly demonstrated sub-par performance, with Horowitz recommending charges for six of them.
Of those six, two were formally charged, Nova Noel and Michael Thomas. The pair were directly tasked with monitoring Epstein at the time of his death, but were said to have been online shopping and/or sleeping instead of conducting a check on his cell every 30 minutes.
