Tara Lipinski expecting first child with husband Todd Kapostasy via surrogate after ‘horrific fertility journey’

Olympic figure skater Tara Lipinski and husband Todd Kapostasy are expecting their first child together via surrogate.

The exciting news comes after years of fertility issues, which the couple have detailed on their podcast Unexpecting.

Lipinski, 41, made the announcement on social media on October 3 before doing a deep dive with Kapostasy, 40, on the couple’s October 5 podcast episode.

After revealing the couple successfully gave one of their embryos to a surrogate who subsequently became pregnant, Lipinski said, “it really was difficult to believe that anything would be different after doing the same thing on repeat for four years.”

So when the time came for a heartbeat scan, Lipinski knew she had to protect herself. While hoping for the best, she also had to prepare for the worst. The former Olympian came up with a plan with her surrogate, Mikayla.

“Mikayla and I had a plan, and the plan was that she was not going to FaceTime me or call me before there was an actual heartbeat because there was just no way that my heart could have taken it,” she said.

“I didn’t want to be on the phone while she was preparing or getting in the room or I’m seeing the initial part of the scan. Like I didn’t care. I didn’t want to know about that. I just wanted to know if there was a heartbeat.”

While Mikayla underwent the exam, Lipinski and Kapostasy waited to hear from their surrogate. Finally, the news they had been waiting for.

Mikayla called via FaceTime to tell the couple there was a heartbeat!

“It felt like the sun was finally setting on our horrific fertility journey,” Lipinski said.

Although it was a big relief to finally have a heartbeat, Lipinski recalled “sobbing.”

And while Lipinski processed years of trauma, Kapostasy took victory laps around the couple’s kitchen.

“It was like a touchdown celebration, going nuts.”

Congratulations to Tara and Todd! May the rest of the pregnancy go incredibly smooth. There’s no one else who deserves to be a parent more than you two.
