I’ve never been kicked out of anywhere because of what I was wearing, but I can only imagine that’s it a pretty mortifying experience – especially if you don’t really know the reason why. This is what happened to Tori Jenkins, who was going for a dip in the pool of her apartment complex but was asked to leave because of her bathing suite.
Tori was puzzled as to why, she couldn’t see how her bathing suite was an issue – can you?
Tori Jenkins was about to take a dip in the pool of the apartment complex where she lives, when she was suddenly denied entrance by staff members. She was told her bathing suit was inappropriate and that there had been complaints from other residents who were there. They were implying that it was way too ‘risqué’ in a pool area with children.
This is the bathing suit:
In front of her friends and other residents, Tori was given two options – either cover up or leave. She was humiliated and generally shocked by the whole situation. Together with her fiancée Tyler, who was just as speechless, they decided to go speak to the apartment office. They thought they would easily resolve the problem there and most likely receive an apology.
That’s not what happened. The lady at the apartment office suggested they take a picture of Tori and have a proper look for themselves to see how inappropriate she looks in front of kids. “When my fiancée replied with ‘I know what I look like, I bought this myself, it’s not a thong’ the consultant told Tori that if she didn’t have kids herself, she wouldn’t understand. She was told that the leasing consultant wouldn’t want her own kids around Tori.” Tyler writes on his Facebook.
The lady went onto say that “a normal bathing suit covers your entire butt” and that “there are a lot of teenage boys in this complex, and you don’t need to excite them.”
Tyler was furious – he thought the whole thing was completely discriminatory and a violation of a number of rights. He decided to take to his Facebook site to share what had happened. To his surprise, the couple received an enormous amount of support, with tens of thousands of people sharing his post.
It’s important to call injustice out when you see it in any shape or form. Body shaming is never ok, please share if you agree.
