Ashnikko has triggered a heated online debate after telling fans at a Budapest festival that she felt her period was about to begin – and warning them she could end up “free bleeding” onstage.
The 30-year-old rapper, whose real name is Ashton Nicole Casey, made the unexpected announcement during her performance at Sziget Festival in Budapest this weekend. This time, menstruation became part of the show.
Videos from the performance have since circulated online, showing Ashnikko addressing the crowd about her period.
“Just so everyone knows, I feel like I’m right about to start my period, so if I’m free bleeding at any point on this stage, respect and love,” Ashnikko said according to Tyla. “Send hearts up to me.”
She then turned the announcement into part of her performance, singing, “Free bleeding in Budapest!” three times before adding: “That would be so cute.”
The crowd appeared to enjoy the moment, but the clip sparked a very different reaction online.
What is free bleeding?
Free bleeding refers to menstruating without using traditional period products such as tampons, menstrual cups or sanitary pads. Instead, menstrual blood is allowed to flow naturally, typically into a person’s underwear or clothing.
People choose to free bleed for different reasons. Some find traditional period products uncomfortable, while others see the practice as a way to challenge the stigma surrounding menstruation.
Many differing views quickly became apparent after footage of Ashnikko’s comments was shared online.
One TikTok user responded to a video posted by PinkNews by asking: “HOW are ya’ll comfortable free bleeding?,” according to Tyla.
Sparked reactions online
Another person was even more blunt, writing: “Wtf is wrong with people?”
Others came to Ashnikko’s defense.
“We were meant to free bleed btw,” one person wrote.
Another wrote: “Isn’t free bleeding more healthy than using a pad? She’s so comfortable and I love that!”
“Mind you she’s literally just telling people to not worry if they see blood,” a third person pointed out.
Someone else added: “Crazy how this is like the cleanest blood and somehow yall are most disgusted by it.”
