Despite the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine, the Black Sea resort area of Zatoka is still a popular destination for vacationers. Swimmers and sunbathers dot the area despite being warned about the dangers.

This past weekend, a horrible tragedy occurred, leaving everyone reeling. Local authorities have urged people not to swim in the waters due to the high risk of mines drifting in from the frontline of the war.

On Sunday, August 10, exactly that happened. At 11.30am local time, two men and one woman were killed by ‘explosive devices’, according to reports from the BBC.

“All of them have been killed by explosive devices while swimming in areas prohibited for recreation,” regional governor Oleh Kiper said.

“This once again proves that being in unchecked waters is fatally dangerous. Each of them has undergone a comprehensive inspection — the presence of shelters, the absence of mine danger both on land and in water.”

Police in the area have warned visitors about the risks of swimming in the prohibited areas and as summertime arrived, the warnings became stricter.

The identities of the people who lost their lives at the beaches between Karolino-Buhaz and Zatoka have been kept under wraps.

“It has been previously determined that three vacationers – a woman and two men – died while swimming as a result of two explosions of unknown objects. The identities of the deceased are being established,” the police said in their report.

The Black Sea has been filled with minefields ever since Russia began its invasion of Ukraine in 2022. Forces on both ends have deployed the mines in order to protect their waters and ports, attempting to block naval routes.

Becuase of weather and water conditions, some mines have managed to dislodge and travel towards tourist destinations.

United States President, Donald Trump is set to meet Russian President Vladmir Putin in Alaska this week to discuss brining an end to this war.

“The highly anticipated meeting between myself, as President of the United States of America, and President Vladimir Putin, of Russia, will take place next Friday, August 15, 2025, in the Great State of Alaska,” Trump wrote on his platform, Truth Social.

“Further details to follow. Thank you for your attention to this matter!”

This is such a horrible tragedy. We are sending our best to the families of those who lost their lives on this day.
