The ‘bizarre reason’ Justin Bieber performed at Grammys in his underwear

There’s a lot to unpack from this year’s Grammy Awards, but in amongst the buzz surrounding Chappell Roan appearing topless on the red carpet and Cher mistakenly announcing a dead artist as a winner, there was a performance that arguably stole the show.

Justin Bieber is no stranger to the spotlight. Having burst onto the scene at the tender age of 15, it was abundantly clear for anyone with a pair of eyes and ears that he was destined for stardom.

Fast forward to 2026, Biebs, now 31 years old, has experienced all the usual ups and downs associated with the rollercoaster ride that is part and parcel of being an international mega-celebrity.

The Baby songmaker took the stage at the 2026 Grammy Awards to perform his hit Yukon, and it wasn’t his voice or undeniable star aura that got people talking immediately.

I suppose it’s difficult for fans to focus on the more nuanced aspects of a performance when the performer in question is standing in his boxer shorts.

That’s right, Bieber – nominated for no less than four awards at this year’s Grammys – stripped his look down its bare essentials, taking the stage in his underwear alone.

Needless to say, social media erupted in response.

“Why the hell is Justin Bieber performing in his UNDERPANTS at the Grammys?” one person wrote on X.

“I don’t want to see that s*** lol.”

Another opined: “Justin Bieber feel this is the right cultural climate to be performing in his underpants?”

Just why the Canadian superstar chose to forego the majority of his clothes was a topic very much up for discussion, but the real reason is perhaps slightly less salacious than some initially assumed.

It turns out Bieber has a brand he’s been plugging consistently for a while now. It’s called Skylrk, and sells everything from phone cases to jeans, sunglasses to sliders, and… yes, boxer shorts.

It doesn’t take a marketing genius to put two and two together. The boxers Bieber was showing off to the world at the weekend were Skylrk, reportedly leading to a not-inconsiderable lift in purchases.

In any case, Bieber’s performance – purple guitar and all – was well received, with many happy to see the singer back doing what he does best after a period where he took time off to focus on his health.

The 31-year-old sparked fears when he canceled his 2022 Justice World Tour for health reasons. Bieber’s set to perform at Coachella this year, his first concert since that cancelation.
