U.K. Prime Minister Boris Johnson has tested positive for coronavirus.
The Prime Minister confirmed the news in a tweet adding: “Over the last 24 hours I have developed mild symptoms and tested positive for coronavirus.
“I am now self-isolating, but I will continue to lead the government’s response via video-conference as we fight this virus,” he said in a video message he posted on Twitter.
“Together we will beat this. #StayHomeSaveLives.”
His partner Carrie Symonds is pregnant and the couple were last seen together in public on March 26 when she joined other government members as part of a nationwide applause for NHS workers battling the coronavirus pandemic.
The Prime Minister is self-isolating
Mr Johnson was tested on the advice of his chief medical officer after reportedly suffering mild symptoms 24 hours ago, according to a statement cited by Sky News.
“The test was carried out in No 10 (Downing Street) by NHS staff and the result of the test was positive,” the statement added.
“In keeping with the guidance, the Prime Minister is self-isolating in Downing Street.
“He is continuing to lead the government’s response to coronavirus.”
His Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab would lead the country if Mr Johnson becomes too sick, the Prime Minster’s spokesman confirmed, as per Sky News.
The U.K. now has 11,813 confirmed cases of coronavirus and 580 deaths, according to figures from John Hopkins University.
