A Nevada judge was attacked Wednesday during a sentencing hearing, and the frightening incident was captured on camera.
Deobra Delone Redden, 30, was in a Las Vegas courtroom awaiting his sentencing when he leaped over the defense table and flew over the judge’s bench causing Clark County District Judge Mary Kay Holthus to fall back out of her seat.
While she suffered some injuries, Holthus was not hospitalized.
The attack occurred Wednesday morning as Redden waited to hear his sentence for the charge of attempted battery with substantial bodily harm.
Redden, who had a history of violent crimes, pleaded with Holthus, asking her to spare him from prison, though he stated if it was necessary he understood.
“I feel like I shouldn’t be sent to prison, but if it’s appropriate for you, then you gotta do what you gotta do,” he said.
Just as Holthus was about to state her decision, Redden swore at the judge and then jumped over the defense table and leaped over the judge’s bench before landing on top of Holthus.
The judge fell backwards and suffered injuries, but did not go to the hospital.
A man who was standing nearby along with a court marshal subdued Redden. The courtroom marshal suffered a gash to his forehead and was treated at a local hospital.
“It happened so fast it was hard to know what to do,” said Richard Scow, the chief county district attorney who prosecuted Redden.
The defendant was charged with felony battery.
