Donald Trump has reflected on the last time he ever spoke to Charlie Kirk before the assassination that rocked the US last week.
On Wednesday, September 10, Kirk was speaking at an outdoor event at Utah Valley University as part of his American Comeback tour with Turning Point USA, the company he cofounded in 2012, when he was shot through the neck with a bolt-action rifle.
The right wing political commentator was pronounced dead 90 minutes later in hospital, while a manhunt to find his killer was launched immediately. 33 hours after the shot was fired, 22-year-old Tyler Robinson, of Utah, was taken into custody after reportedly being convinced to turn himself in by his own father.
The tragic saga attracted the attention of the world’s media, and figures on both the left and right sides of US politics spoke out against the shooting.
Indeed, it was President Trump who actually broke the news of Kirk’s death, before going on to address the nation with a video many believed to have been made with the assistance of AI.
On Friday, meanwhile, Trump made an appearance on Fox News to announce that the authorities had a suspect in custody (later confirmed to be the aforementioned Robinson), prior to sharing his wish that the individual who shot Kirk ultimately face the death penalty.

The POTUS, for whom Kirk had always been a staunch ally, has now opened up on the last time he spoke with Kirk, revealing that the Turning Point USA cofounder regularly called him up and encouraged his participation.
“So the last time I spoke to him, he said ‘Sir,’ then he goes ‘Phoenix,'” Trump explained.
“‘Sir could you, er, get to Phoenix,’ this was like in a day. I said, ‘Charlie, I’m the President of the United States, you’ve called me, asking me if I could speak tomorrow in Phoenix? You can’t do that to me, Charlie.”
“But I usually ended up going,” Trump then said with a laugh. “He was great. He was a great guy and he didn’t deserve this. He didn’t deserve this, believe me.”

Sunday, September 21 will see a memorial service take place for Kirk at State Farm Stadium in Arizona. President Trump is tipped to attend, as are a number of other government officials.
Trump, who has already stated that he will posthumously bestow upon Kirk the Presidential Medal of Freedom, revealed he is prepared for a “very sad weekend”.
“We lost a great person. I’ll be going on early Sunday morning,” Trump said of the plans to travel for the memorial service. “We’re going to Arizona, taking some people with us, on Air Force One.”
Rest in peace, Charlie Kirk.
