A heartbreaking tragedy has touched a family in Chicago. But amid the sorrow, a new life has also arrived. 32-year-old firefighter Michael Altman died in a fire, but the funeral was postponed. Why? His widow gave birth to the couple’s second child.
Firefighter Michael Altman, 32, lost his life after being seriously injured while fighting a fire earlier this month. He fell through a collapsing floor during the dangerous rescue and later died from his injuries in the hospital.
“While working to extinguish the blaze, Firefighter EMT Altman sustained serious injuries and was transported to Stroger Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries,” CFD Commissioner Annette Nance-Holt said at a press conference on March 17.
Michael was not just a firefighter. He came from a long line of heroes as he was the fourth generation in his family to serve. He was known for his bravery and big heart.
Michael Altman leaves behind his wife, Nora Altman, and their young son. And at the time of his death, the family was also waiting for their second child. But then something unexpected happened.
Firefighter’s funeral postponed as grieving wife goes into labor with their second child
Michael’s funeral was planned for March 27. Family, friends, and colleagues were preparing to say their final goodbye. Then, just before the ceremony, his wife went into labor. Because of this, the funeral had to be postponed.
In a statement to People Magazine, the Chicago Fire Department said that the funeral service for firefighter/EMT Michael Altman, originally planned for Friday morning, March 27, had been rescheduled for a later date.
“Mrs. Altman is in labor,” the department said, referring to the firefighter’s widow, Nora Altman.
While the family is grieving an unimaginable loss, they are celebrating the welcoming of a new baby into the world. Nora gave birth to a baby girl, Evelyn Rose.
People across the city have shown their support, honoring Michael’s courage and sacrifice. Many gathered to pay their respects, remembering a man who gave everything to protect others.
At the same time, authorities say a suspect has been arrested and charged in connection with the fire that led to his death. Now, the family faces a difficult road ahead, mourning a loving husband and father, while also celebrating the birth of a new life. A heartbreaking goodbye – but a beautiful hello.
