The last survivor of the Robb Elementary School shooting has left the hospital more than two months after the massacre that left 19 children and two teachers dead.
Hospital staff chanted the little girl’s name as she walked down the hallway handing out roses before getting into her family’s car and driving away with a big smile on her face.
On July 29, Mayah Zamora left University Health in San Antonio, Texas. Since arriving at the hospital on May 24 in critical condition, the 10-year-old had endured several surgeries.
A GoFundMe had been set up to help her “long road to recovery.” By August 2, more than $110,000 had been raised.
Mayah’s family updated the page in the beginning of June to thank those who had already donated.
“Mayah has a very long road to recovery, and we’re going to be with her the entire way. This long road includes numerous surgeries Mayah had undergone, future surgeries she may require, future hospital and doctor’s visits, mental health/trauma treatment, amongst many other things.”
About a month later, in early July, her brother Ruben Zamora shared another update on Facebook.
Ruben reported that his sister started physical therapy and it was believed she would continue it for another six months.
“Time in hospital still is not certain,” he wrote. “It can be as long as another month+ , or as short as 2 weeks. We will just have to see how much my sister can progress. But I’ll tell you what she is strong, she is determined, she is stubborn, she is hard headed- and on top of all that.. she wants to get out of that hospital.”
Weeks later, Mayah surprised everyone when she was able to be discharged from the hospital.
University Health shared a heartwarming video of the 10-year-old leaving the hospital to applause from the medical staff.
Congratulations, Mayah! May you continue to heal mentally, physically, and emotionally. It will be a long road, but your loved ones will be right by your side.
