A video from the White House showing Melania Trump alongside a humanoid robot named Figure 3 has drawn significant attention online.
The U.S. First Lady appeared alongside an unexpected guest during the Fostering the Future Together summit in Washington, D.C., where she welcomed representatives from more than 40 countries to discuss an initiative aimed at improving children’s access to education and technology worldwide.
In a clip that quickly spread online, Melania Trump is seen walking down a red-carpeted hallway with the AI-powered robot at her side. Figure 3 was developed by the robotics company Figure, which says the robot is capable of handling “care of household tasks like laundry, cleaning, and doing dishes, all autonomously.
Fostering the Future Together summit
As they approached a table where multiple world leaders were seated, the humanoid began speaking.
“Thank you, First Lady Melania Trump, for inviting me to the White House,” it said, according to Tyla.
“It is an honor to be at Fostering the Future Together’s global coalition inaugural meeting. I’m Figure 3, a humanoid built in the United States of America.”
It continued: “I am grateful to be a part of this historic movement to empower children with technology and education. Welcome,” highlighting the role technology could play in children’s futures before greeting the audience in 11 different languages.
Melania then responded warmly to the unusual guest.
“Welcome to the White House. Figure 3, thank you for joining me at day two of Fostering the Future Together. It’s fair to say, you’re my first American-made humanoid guest.”
“I never thought I’d be alive to see all of this happen”
According to Fox News, Melania also suggested that robots like Figure 3 could become a more common part of everyday life in the near future. While some have praised the development of new technology, others have raised concerns, including fears that artificial intelligence could one day replace human teachers.
One X user wrote: “Replace teachers? With a machine? AI over teachers. That’s the idea. Instead of calling for better pay for our nation’s educators/heroes. Sad day!,” according to Tyla.
Another wrote, “I don’t want my daughter’s teacher to be a humanoid robot named Plato. I want her teacher to be a human being that is paid a living wage and is not forced to work 3 jobs to survive.”
A third added: “Trump and this administration really are trying to usher in the dystopian future that people have been predicting and writing about for decades. I never thought I’d be alive to see all of this happen. It’s crazy.”
