Michelle Obama, 62, knows what it feels like to have the world scrutinize everything she wears.
But at the US Open, it wasn’t just her Chanel dress that caught people’s attention.
From her most talked-about White House looks to her bolder style today, Michelle Obama has never been afraid to make a fashion statement. And her latest appearance at the US Open was no exception.
Michelle was there cheering on American tennis star Coco Gauff, but it was the photos of the former first lady that quickly spread online and had fans taking a closer look.
On September 10, Michelle arrived in a textured red, white and navy Chanel dress, looking polished as ever. But as more close-up photos began circulating, fans started noticing a few details that were much harder to miss up close.
Her ears were covered in gold jewelry. And then there was the ring.

Her longtime stylist, Meredith Koop, has also noticed the shift in Michelle Obama’s style. Speaking to InStyle last November, Koop described a woman who has become increasingly comfortable embracing a bolder side of fashion.
“This is a very sexy, confident, self-assured woman, who isn’t shying away from bold clothing,” Koop said.
And Michelle’s fans clearly noticed the same thing. One fan admitted the dress itself wasn’t quite their favorite, but still couldn’t deny the overall impact of her look:
“I don’t love the texture of this dress, but she of course continues to be iconic in every single way. I love, love her hair and her glow.”
Michelle’s jewelry wasn’t a random styling choice.
In 2026. Michelle revealed that she once imagined having multiple ear piercings arranged like “a cluster, a constellation, with twinkles.” Earlier this year, she finally went for it — and ended up getting 10 new piercings in one sitting.
The result is the elaborate ear stack fans spotted at the US Open, paired with multiple rings and a diamond that quickly became a talking point of its own.
There’s an interesting story behind why this kind of look feels so different from the Michelle many people remember from the White House. For eight years, even something as personal as her hair could become a political calculation.
Michelle has said she considered wearing braids while she was first lady but worried that Americans simply weren’t ready to see her that way.
”When I’m out of the public eye, I am swimming, I am playing tennis and braids represent that kind of freedom for me,” she told People in 2025 and continued:
”[In the White House] I wasn’t sure whether the country was ready for it. The Crown Act [which protects employees and students from race-based hair discrimination] hadn’t been passed yet, and just like fashion, I didn’t want my hair to become a distraction.”
Fashion brought a similar kind of scrutiny.
During her White House years, Michelle became one of the most closely watched women in America, with everything from her dresses to her shoes analyzed.
“I was supposed to stand out without overshadowing others, to blend in but not fade away. It was a thin line to walk,” Michelle once told Elle.
Michelle Obama later recalled how frustrating it could be to see the focus shift from what she was saying to what she was wearing. After giving an emotional speech to schoolgirls in London, she was surprised to discover that the first question a reporter asked her staff was, “Who made her dress?”
It was a moment that made her realize just how easily women in the public eye can be reduced to their appearance. As Michelle put it, “We are often reduced to what we look like. We are often attacked for what we look like.”
Today, the rules are different.
She can wear braids. She can build a dramatic ear stack. She can pile on rings and let a diamond catch the light — without every small choice having to represent anything beyond herself. And perhaps that’s what fans were really seeing at the US Open.
