“Hurricane Florence’s impact on our students and families put the district in a position where this is possible due to the number of affected households,” Brunswick County Schools said in a statement. “We sincerely hope this helps each and every family still recovering from the devastating impact of last year’s natural disaster.”
For the 2019-2020 school year BCS will transition into the Community Eligibility Provision Program (CEP), a program through the USDA that allows school districts to serve breakfast and lunch at no cost to students without collecting household applications. Those that enroll in the program agree to serve meals to students for four consecutive years.
Schools are reimbursed using a formula based on the number of students eligible for free meals.
During the summer BCS Child Nutrition Department offers kids and teens free meals at no cost. More information can be found here.
This is great news for those families still struggling after Hurricane Florence. Now students and their families won’t have to worry about going to school hungry.
