Ohio ‘House of Horrors’ grandmother has requested gag order that could stop the public from hearing anything more about the case.
Christina Siders, 66, has made a last-minute request through her public defender just days after a judge granted a similar order to her son Gary Siders Jr.
If approved, the gag order would prevent officials, attorneys and potentially media outlets from publicly discussing the case until after the trial concludes.
A case that has shocked a nation
Police stumbled upon the case by accident on July 2 while executing a search warrant related to an unrelated matter at a rural home in Hamden, Ohio.
Inside they found 16 children aged between 18 months and 18 years confined largely to a single 12-by-12-foot room filled with human waste. Vinton County Sheriff Ryan Cain said most livestock was kept in better conditions.
Four adults were arrested: Elizabeth Siders, 33, Gary Siders Jr., 36, Gary Siders Sr., 73, and Christina Siders. They are believed to be the children’s parents and grandparents.
All four have been charged with 16 counts of second-degree felony child endangerment and have pleaded not guilty.
Since the discovery details have been emerging steadily, including that Elizabeth had given birth to conjoined twins in 2022 who died at 24 weeks, and that the children had allegedly been living in those conditions for at least four years.
What a gag order would mean
A gag order is a legal process that bars individuals involved in a case from publicly speaking about it. Its primary purpose is to prevent the jury pool from being influenced by outside information and to ensure a fair trial.
If granted, it would mean no new court details reported in the press, no social media commentary drawing on case information and no breakdown videos or coverage until after the trial has concluded.
The request comes as the case continues to attract national attention and as prosecutors have indicated additional charges beyond the current 16 counts per defendant are still possible.
