Usha Vance stood by her husband through the very challenging period of campaigning beside Donald Trump in the 2024 Presidential Election.
While it isn’t strange that couples can have different opinions on things, the fact that she’s quiet while JD Vance sometimes uses hateful rhetoric and seems to be treating his role as Vice President with indifferent dignity raises questions.
In Usha’s position – she is, of course, the Second Lady of the USA – she can make a genuine difference for a better America. So I wonder, is the pursuit of power worth more than being a good person?
Usha Vance has had an amazing career as a lawyer, but she’s now put that field of work on pause. She is now the Second Lady of the United States after her husband, JD Vance, became Donald Trump’s pick for vice president. Usha’s parents are Indian immigrants, and sadly, racism is still alive and thriving in some parts of the country.
Only last year, Usha was attacked online by white supremacists via far-right social media posts, but the reality is that racism appears to be closer to her than perhaps anyone could imagine.
Usha Vance is staying quiet
While Usha Vance wasn’t the one running beside Donald Trump, she had a front-row seat to witness how both he and her husband arguably sprinkled their campaign with vile language and hateful rhetoric.
Some instances were more shocking than others, but perhaps one of the most upsetting came when Trump claimed Kamala Harris had decided that she was black shortly before the election. The sheer inappropriateness was shocking, and Usha must have been stunned.
Her and JD’s children are bi-racial, remember, and yet there was the aspiring next President of the United States (and her husband’s boss) flaunting his bigotry for the world to hear.
It’s important to point out that we don’t know what opinions she may have expressed in private, but I can’t imagine what was going through her head when Trump made the aforementioned remark. Did she consider the morals of the man her husband was supporting and running for Office with? If she didn’t… at what point is enough enough?
The 9/11 conspiracy theorist Laura Loomer once said that the White House would “smell like curry” if she won. Admittedly JD Vance said he didn’t like the comment – but he also said that he makes a “mean chicken curry.”
Though he added some humor to the equation, he didn’t take the firm and somewhat obvious stance that racism has zero place in society. Oh, JD, you didn’t “like” the comment? If I were Usha, I would be far from satisfied with such a tepid retort.
“We must do better”
Usha Vance has given few interviews but repeatedly defended her husband. Mankind has engaged in the fight for political power for thousands of years, but at what cost?
Usha has the opportunity to do some serious good now and, at the very least, impress upon the fact that racism, in any of its ugly forms, is never OK. It’s often said that one should be viewed as an accomplice if one stands idly by while someone is doing something heinous.
Sure, she’s not literally watching on in silence while a crime is being committed. One must question why Usha chooses to remain quiet when her husband—and more often Donald Trump—makes questionable remarks.
Supporting bigotry is tragic, whichever way you look at it. We must do better.
