Robert De Niro shows no signs of easing up regarding his outspoken criticism of President Donald Trump, having revealed his opinion that only by locking Trump up could people “make American great again.”
The two-time Oscar winning actor made his most recent anti-Trump comments at the 2019 American Icon Awards in Los Angeles on Monday, May 20, reinforcing his belief that Trump isn’t fit to be the president.
De Niro, called on stage to honor longtime friend and Hollywood favorite Al Pacino, used the opportunity to deliver some choice advice to the general public. Unsurprisingly, it was Donald Trump in his scope.
According to Variety Magazine, De Niro said: “The individual who currently purports to lead this country is not worthy of any tribute, unless you think of his impeachment and imprisonment as a sort of tribute. And that’s how you can make America great again.”
The 75-year-old actor has never shied away from voicing his opinion on America’s 45th president, having labelled him a “total loser”, a “wannabe gangster” and an “unrepentant lying scumbag” in the past.
Needless to say, De Niro’s most recent comments have stoked the fire of debate online, with people split as to where their allegiances lie. Several notable personalities criticized the actor, whilst others were quick to make it clear they endorsed his statement.
In any case, Trump certainly has his hands full at the moment with his re-election campaign in full swing. His recent hike of tariffs on goods from China, dodging of calls for the publication of his tax documents, and the storm surrounding the release of the Mueller report have left him with a lot to answer for, though there’s no doubt he has the continued support of millions.
