Sandra Bullock has been through some tough times recently, but it’s heartwarming to know that her famous ex considers her one of his greatest girlfriends.
With Bullock recently in the headlines, memories of her short-lived relationship with a famous actor 16 years her junior has come up. The two crossed paths in the early 2000s while working together on a 2002 film and secretly dated for nearly two years before quietly calling it quits.
During their time together, Bullock and her partner never officially acknowledged their relationship. However, almost eight years after their separation, Ryan Gosling finally opened up about their past romance.
Their paths first crossed in 2001 while filming ‘Murder By Numbers’. In the movie, Bullock portrayed Cassie Mayweather, a homicide detective, who collaborated closely with Gosling’s character, Richard Hayward, a high school prodigy involved in a murder committed with a classmate.
Despite the fact that Gosling was an up-and-coming star and Bullock had already been a part of the acting industry for over 15 years, they kindled a romantic connection after wrapping up the film and embarking on a promotional tour. Bullock, aged 37 at the time, was 16 years senior to her younger co-star, making their age gap a topic of discussion.
While the public and media were convinced that the duo was an item, they never officially acknowledged the rumors. In a February 2003 interview with Cosmopolitan, Bullock alluded to their relationship when asked about being falsely linked to Gosling by the press.
When questioned about why people often fall in love on film sets, Bullock explained how movie sets serve as “the greatest dating service on the planet,” stating: “You take two people who normally can’t leave the house, who don’t know if people are with them for the right reasons, and they get paired up because they have chemistry, and they happen to fall in love.”
When asked if she believed that a man and a woman with great chemistry could remain just friends, Bullock admitted that she had a “hard time” maintaining a platonic relationship after ending a romance.
Drawing a parallel to her previous relationship with Matthew McConaughey, Bullock, despite their romantic involvement, claimed to the press that they were “just friends.” When questioned about her relationship with Gosling, she responded: “Let me see if I can answer that politically and correctly. We’re friends.”
Bullock also shared that Gosling had taught her to “chill” and to not worry so much over trivial things, describing him as “like a little Buddha.”
Gosling later believed that both of his high-profile relationships ended due to the nature of working in Hollywood and showbusiness.
Despite keeping their relationship private, both Bullock and Gosling eventually admitted to it after their breakup. Gosling, in particular, attributed external factors within the entertainment industry as the reason their relationship ended.
While we will never know the exact reasons for their decision to keep their relationship hidden , Gosling finally confirmed to the Independent in 2011 that he and the actress had dated from 2002 to 2003, just short of two years.
It was during that interview that the ‘Barbie’ actor acknowledged two significant relationships in his life, with many people thinking he was referring to Bullock and Rachel McAdams. “I had two of the greatest girlfriends of all time,” he stated, adding: “I haven’t met anybody who could top them.”
Gosling and Bullock have moved on to new partners since the end of their romance. Gosling is currently in a long-term relationship with another actress, Eva Mendes, with whom he shares two children.
As for Bullock, she divorced her first husband in 2010 and was in a long-term relationship with photographer Bryan Randall, who sadly passed away a few weeks ago after privately battling ALS for three years. Bullock has also adopted two children.
