Team Mongolia’s uniform at Paris Olympics hailed as ‘most beautiful’ by internet

Social media is abuzz with unanimous praise for Mongolia’s national uniforms for the highly anticipated Paris 2024 Olympics.

Over 30 athletes from Mongolia will showcase these stunning ensembles, inspired by traditional East Asian designs, leaving internet users in awe.

On July 3, Michel&Amazonka, Mongolia’s most progressive fashion brand, revealed the first look of these uniforms on their official Instagram page.

The Olympic games are set to commence on Friday, July 26, and run until August 11, and the online reaction to the uniforms was swift and overwhelmingly positive.

One Instagram user wrote: “Omg u guys really ate this one,” while another simply commented: “I’m impressed.”

A third admirer added: “This costume is simply magnificent.”

Based in Ulaanbaatar, Michel&Amazonka was founded in 2015 by sisters Michel, Amazonka, and Munkhjargal Choigaalaa. The brand is known for its ability to seamlessly blend Mongolian cultural elements with contemporary fashion, cutting across both couture and ready-to-wear collections. This is the second consecutive Olympics for which Michel&Amazonka has designed the team’s uniforms.

According to Montsame, Mongolia‘s state-owned news agency, the ceremonial attire for the 33rd Summer Olympics incorporates national and Olympic symbols. These include the Nine White Banners, symbolizing the veneration of the Mongolian State, the Olympic torch, the Paris Olympics emblem, and representations of the sun, moon, and the Gua-Maral (mythical deer), all meticulously embroidered with golden thread.

Eternal Landscapes explained in 2014 that the sun and moon are revered by Mongolians as their nation’s mother (sun) and father (moon). These elements are also represented in the Soyombo, the first character of the Mongolian Soyombo script, featured on the national flag.

Female athletes’ outfits include ceremonial earrings and embroidered bags, while male flag-bearers will don archery hats, belts, and traditional Mongolian boots, as reported by CNN. The intricate crafting of each outfit took an average of 20 hours, according to the Mongolian National Olympic Committee.

Since the first reveal, the uniforms have garnered increasing popularity. Fashion critic Ryan Yip shared his admiration on TikTok on July 14, in a video that has amassed over 2.4 million views.

Praising the designers, he said: “These are not runway pieces, this is the Mongolian Olympic uniform. Tell me what motivated Michel Amazonka and the whole of [the] Mongolian Olympic team to pop off that hard. Tell me what motivated that because I need to learn that sorcery.” He added, “They just won the Olympics before it even started.”

TikToker Bee Jamieson also shared her thoughts in a video viewed nearly 322,000 times. She commented: “It looks like everything’s been really well thought out. I love the little bags, very cute.” Addressing some negative feedback regarding the uniforms’ traditional elements, Bee defended the designs, saying, “I think that when it comes to the Olympics, you have to be over the top, and this is beautiful.”

Mongolia has sent 32 athletes to compete in nine sports at the Paris 2024 Olympics.

The Mongolian Judo Federation will lead the contingent with 10 judokas, followed by eight freestyle wrestlers. The boxing team has secured two spots, although no male boxers will participate this year. Additionally, notable features of the Mongolian team include the qualification of two top cyclists. Mongolian athletes will also compete in archery, athletics, shooting, weightlifting, and swimming.
