A toxicology expert says Christa Pike could face serious, lasting physical damage if she does wake up after the botched execution.
Christa Pike remains in critical condition at a Nashville hospital, unconscious and on a ventilator, after her execution was halted mid-procedure due to severe complications.
WSMV 4 Nashville reporter Steve Mehling spoke with a doctor specializing in toxicology, who said the earliest warning sign was the burning sensation in Pike’s arm.
“I just spoke with a doctor well-versed in toxicology and poisonous drugs. They tell me the first big sign that this process was going wrong was the burning in Pike’s arm. Likely points to the IV being placed incorrectly,” Mehling wrote.
What could happen if she wakes up
The expert, asked not to be named due to possible professional risk for speaking without approval, said pentobarbital reaching the soft tissue instead of the bloodstream causes immediate, localized damage.
“The doctor tells me Pike may suffer from a flurry of long-term effects. This includes skin necrosis, permanent scarring, functional impairment, compartment syndrome, chronic neuropathic pain and pigmentation change at the injection site. Won’t know for a couple days,” Mehling reported.
Court filings in Davidson County Chancery Court lay out just how bad things looked when Pike arrived at the hospital. Her attorneys say her arms were “swollen, burned and blistered,” and argue the execution team never got the IV lines properly placed or maintained, letting the drug leak into surrounding tissue instead of her veins.
According to the filing, Pike was crying and whimpering, telling staff her arm felt “like it’s about to burst open” before a second dose was given anyway.
Pike’s attorney Randy Spivey said at a news conference that he counted at least seven needle insertions into her left arm over roughly an hour, and that her right arm turned purple during the process.
What her attorneys want now
Pike’s legal team has filed an emergency motion asking that all evidence from the execution attempt be preserved.
“I hope that we’re given the opportunity to find out exactly what happened, that all the records are preserved, and that we’re able to get that information so that we know what happened,” attorney Stephen Ferrell said.
Governor Bill Lee has ordered an independent review and paused every execution in Tennessee for the rest of 2026. Pike’s team is pushing for her sentence to be fully commuted, while her appeal remains under review in federal court.
“We want to make sure that Christa recovers and has some input in what she wants,” Ferrell said.
