UK prime minister’s awkward response to Trump labeling his ‘friend’ as‘nasty’

Donald Trump has left the US for a brief visit to the UK, where he met Prime Minister Keir Starmer to discuss several issues. However, when engaging in a joint meeting with the press, Trump lashed out at London mayor Sir Sadiq Khan. What he didn’t know was that Starmer actually is friends with Khan – and issues an awkward response.

Donald Trump has held meetings with Prime Minister Keir Starmer in Scotland. Issues discussed included tariffs, Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, and the crisis in Gaza. Meanwhile, Trump also took the time to play one of his golf courses in Scotland.

Starmer visited the White House some months ago, where he handed over a handwritten letter from King Charles to Donald Trump, along with an official invitation to visit the UK in September. The two had some awkward moments during the US meeting earlier this year.

Unfortunately, another incident occurred as they met the press in Edinburgh on Monday. During an hour-long news conference, Donald Trump suddenly lashed out against London Mayor Sir Sadiq Khan.

When asked about whether he would visit London during the State Visit in September, the president answered, “I will, I’m not a fan of your mayor, I think he’s done a terrible job,” adding, “A nasty person, I think.

Keir Starmer sat next to Donald Trump, and it was apparent he disagreed with the president regarding Khan. In fact, the UK Prime Minister swiftly interrupted, saying, “He’s a friend of mine.”

Donald Trump says London Mayor does “terrible job” in front of ‘friend’ Keir Starmer

Still, Donald Trump wasn’t done, and continued by saying, “I think he’s done a terrible job but I will certainly visit London, I hope so.”

Sadiq Khan and Donald Trump have clashed several times before, lashing out at each other. While history is history, it didn’t take long before Sadiq’s spokesperson released a statement, saying, “Sadiq is delighted that President Trump wants to come to the greatest city in the world. He’d see how our diversity makes us stronger not weaker; richer, not poorer.”

“Perhaps these are the reasons why a record number of Americans have applied for British citizenship under his presidency,” it concluded.

While Trump might have been on the offensive regarding Khan, he also put on a charm face, praising the UK-US relations.

“The prime minister, he’s been so supportive of us and so strong and so respected, and I respect him much more today than I did before, because I just met his wife and family. He’s got a perfect wife, and that’s never easy to achieve,” Trump said.

Royal fans furious over Charles & Camilla’s Trump invite

Donald Trump is as mentioned set to return to the UK in September for a State Visit where he akong others will meet King Charles and Queen Camilla. However, as the news was made public, the reactions among fans were not only positive. Many raged in the comment section on the Royal Family’s social media post.

“Is this the first time the royals have hosted a convicted felon?” one user claimed.

“Bring on the protests. London does not accept felons,” another stated.

A third asked, Why do you want to host him? HE IS NOT WORTHY OF A VISIT WITH THE KING!” while a fourth added, “Absolutely Disgraceful.”

A fifth person said, “It’s embarrassing that in this political landscape you would allow this visit to proceed. I’m truly disappointed. Truly and I have supported the Royal family through thick and thin.”

Still, others showed great appreciation for the meeting.

“History in the making. President Trump returns to the world stage with strength, class, and unapologetic leadership the kind that commands respect, not just attendance,” one user wrote.

“My bet is this event is more important than anyone could ever dream,” another X user said, while a third stated, “Meeting of two of the most powerful leaders in the world. Great opportunity for big decisions to be taken that benefit the world.”
