What ‘wide neck guy’ looks like today, eight years after his viral mugshot

Back in 2018, one unforgettable mugshot turned Charles McDowell into an overnight internet sensation. Millions of people couldn’t stop talking about his unusually massive neck.

The attention changed his life — but not necessarily in the way anyone expected.

Over the years, there have been plenty of unforgettable mugshots that somehow became famous in their own right. From the ”world’s hottest felon,” whose booking photo launched him into the spotlight, to celebrities and internet personalities whose bizarre or unexpected mugshots quickly became viral sensations, some arrest photos have taken on a life of their own.

One person who definitely fits into that category is Charles McDowell.

McDowell first went viral after his booking photo spread across social media in 2018. His distinctive appearance quickly made him one of the internet’s most recognizable mugshots, and he eventually amassed hundreds of thousands of followers online.

Known online as the “Wide Neck guy,” McDowell appeared to embrace his sudden fame, building a huge social media following and even teaming up with another viral personality for a bizarre rap video.

For example, he teamed up with “Daddy Long Neck,” another internet personality known for his unusual appearance, for a rap called “Neckst Big Thing.”

When Ladbible spoke with McDowell in 2019, they asked the question plenty of people had wondered about: Was his unusually wide neck caused by a medical condition?

But McDowell said he had no explanation for it.

“It ain’t not medical condition. It was just my neck. I can’t figure it out.

“I ain’t gone to the doctor’s or nothing for it. I honestly don’t know.”

He explained that his neck wasn’t particularly large when he was younger, but that it seemed to grow along with him as he got older.

“My granddad’s got a wide neck but his neck ain’t like mine.”

Over the years, McDowell faced additional arrests and allegations involving evading police, drug offenses and other charges. In 2022, authorities reportedly issued a warrant after he was accused of showing up at a woman’s home and sending threatening messages.

McDowell was being held in jail without bond at the time last year / Cherokee County Sheriff’s Offic.

Then came the allegations that would bring much more serious consequences.

In 2025, McDowell was facing multiple felony charges, including allegations involving the electronic transmission of obscene material to a minor.

According to reports, he was accused of sending explicit videos of a woman to several people, including her teenage children and her mother.

Jail records listed multiple charges, including allegations of transmitting or posting nude images without consent, electronically furnishing obscene material to a minor and making harassing phone calls.
