After nine days of gymnastics competition at the 2024 Paris Olympics, we can all breathe a collective sigh of relief, especially the athletes.
Following her silver medal performance on the floor, Simone Biles appeared alongside NBC’s Mike Tirico to discuss her time at the Paris Olympics. The 11-time Olympic medalist also addressed the walking boot she suddenly began wearing.
The 27-year-old gymnast explained the boot was “just precautionary” after she tweaked her calf during warmups on floor exercise during the qualifying stages.
“I feel like elite athletes are pretty tough, so we’re just, through pain or pleasure, we’re ready for whatever,” she said during her sitdown with Tirico. “So mainly, what you’re seeing here is, I was just trying to over rotate for good measure, and I did just that and almost knocked (coach) Laurent [Landi] on out. But it was good.”
Despite the apparent injury, Biles continued to compete with tape wrapped around her calf and went on to win four medals – three gold and one silver – over the course of the competition.
“Right now it’s just precautionary. We’re resting up as much as possible, we have a tour in a couple of weeks. I’m just going to rest and heal,” Biles told Today‘s Hoda Kotb Tuesday morning.
I’m glad to hear the walking boot is just something that’s precautionary. I hope Simone and the other gymnasts who are participating in the tour are able to get enough rest before they hit the road. They worked so hard during the Olympics, and they deserve the rest!
