Whether we like it or not, change is the only constant.
And the latest change we’ll all have to start getting used to is yet another modification to the McDonald’s McFlurry. The fast food chain announced that starting September 10, the sweet treat will be sold in a new size and served in a new container.
“Got a friend who always wants ‘just a bite’? Instead of grabbing an extra spoon, you can grab them a Mini McFlurry of their own. Or maybe you’re looking for a quick afternoon pick-me-up… the Mini McFlurry is perfect for you, too,” read the company’s release.
In addition to the regular size McFlurry, McDonald’s will begin selling a smaller version of their dessert.
Last year McDonald’s phased out the classic hollow spoon served alongside a McFlurry. Now, the fast food chain is taking it a step further by eliminating the plastic dome lid and cup and replacing it with a cardboard cup with four flaps that cover the top.
The change is part of McDonald’s commitment to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 36% from its offices and restaurants by the year 2030.
Using cardboard packaging for both the new Mini McFlurry and regular size McFlurry will help McDonald’s reach its goal of using renewable, recycled or certified materials for 100% of their primary guest packaging by the end of 2025.
The changes come amidst a time where many companies have found themselves struggling for sales and searching for new ways to bring in customers. In June, McDonald’s announced a $5 Meal Deal that was scheduled to last a month, but due to its popularity, it was extended for several more weeks.
I’m all for more sustainable products, but I’m not so sure about these new McFlurry cups. It looks like the ice cream would melt the packaging! What do you think about the change?
