Pour a dash of vinegar in your washing machine – and get rid of stains and odors

Doing laundry isn’t exactly one of my favorite chores, but I always feel good when my clothes are clean and I’m sleeping on fresh sheets again.

It sounds simple, but for me, doing laundry can be more difficult than math.

I wish books were written on the subject. They wouldn’t make for the most interesting reading perhaps, but they’d help a lot.

I myself have had to learn the hard way—and I’ve ruined a lot of garments along the journey.

I usually follow the washing instructions you find on clothing tags. But it seems like every piece of clothing is delicate and the directions seldom suggest washing it over 30°C (86°F). I find that crazy, because clothes can’t get clean without at that temperature!

But after coming across a home remedy that my friend’s grandmother has used for decades, my clothes come out sparkling clean every time.

Now, I know that laundry doesn’t have to be such a frustrating experience, and that’s why I’m sharing this trick here.

The secret is white wine vinegar. It does wonders for your clothes on several levels.

1. Removes tough stains

Soak clothes with hard-to-get-out stains in water and and half a cup of white wine vinegar for 30-60 minutes, and then wash them according to instructions. The stains will be a thing of the past.

2. Neutralizes odors

Offensive odors like sweat and cigarette smoke disappear in a snap when you pour some white vinegar into the rinse dispenser in your washing machine.

3. Prevents static cling

Some fabrics get staticky after you wash them. And it’s no fun when your blouse clings to your body like a sausage casing. Again, it helps if you pour a little white wine vinegar in your washing machine.

4. Easily removes pet hair and lint

Sometimes, my laundry comes out “clean,” but it’s still covered with hair and lint. It’s much easier to get rid of unwanted hair and lint when you pour a little vinegar in your washing machine.

5. Removes yellow underarm stains

White garments have a special ability to attract yellow stains under the arms. And both sweat and deodorant are to blame. But pour a little vinegar in your washing machine and the spots will disappear in no time.

6. Removes unsightly laundry detergent stains

Pour half a cup of white wine vinegar in your washing machine and you’ll get rid of the ugly white powder lines that laundry detergent often leaves behind.

7. Cleans the washing machine

Another important thing to consider is whether your washing machine is clean. You might think that it automatically cleans itself while it’s cleaning your clothes. But even washing machines need a little care sometimes.

Not only with your clothes last longer, they’ll also be cleaner and smell fresher.
