The history of makeup and cosmetics is one that stretches back to ancient Egypt, Rome and Greece, according to archaeological evidence and even references in the old testament. Makeup was used by both men and women in ancient times. In modern history, makeup has been mostly regarded as a tool women use to enhance their appearance.
But makeup has come a long way since the days of the pharaohs and women just simply putting on a lipstick and some eyeshadow. It is a complex skill which requires a certain artistry.
One of these artists is 31-year-old Mimi Choi from Vancouver, Canada. Even calling her a makeup artist is an understatement — she is more like a makeup magician. The talented woman creates remarkable optical illusions and has become famous worldwide.
You would think that Mimi has been working with makeup all her life, but this is not the case. She was a pre-school teacher for 3 years but eventually started feeling like she wasn’t able to express herself the way she wanted.
“I felt like my creativity was suppressed. I enjoyed teaching but I wasn’t completely happy,” she tells Bored Panda. “I needed a new challenge.”
In her spare time after work, Mimi would practice different makeup techniques.
“I’ve always been arty and had done bridal makeup before, which people really liked,” she says. “I wanted to do something different for October 31 [Halloween], so I had a look on Instagram and found a photo of a woman, who looked like her face had cracked.”
That’s when her makeup took a different turn and she started to do some mind-blowing 3D optical illusions through makeup which has impressed a stream of people. She has almost 300,000 followers on Instagram.
See for yourself and tell us what you think. Here are 20 of her most amazing creations.
