Given Tina Turner‘s larger-than-life career and meteoric rise through the music industry, it’s hardly surprising that she wanted her send-off to be a show-stopper.
It’s been said in recent days that the iconic singer, known to millions as the Queen of Rock ‘n’ Roll, was well aware that she was approaching the end of her time on this Earth, and had made a good many plans to be put into motion after she passed on.
Word of the 83-year-old hitmaker’s death was announced last Wednesday, with a statement declaring:
“It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Tina Turner. With her music and her boundless passion for life, she enchanted millions of fans around the world and inspired the stars of tomorrow. Today we say goodbye to a dear friend who leaves us all her greatest work: her music. All our heartfelt compassion goes out to her family. Tina, we will miss you dearly.”
Naturally, the fallout was huge and widespread, with people taking to the internet in droves to pay tributes and respects.
As is so often the case when such a titan passes on, headlines concerning all aspects of Turner’s life have dominated newspapers and news outlets across the globe.
Yesterday, reports detailed how Tina had moved to settle her affairs in the years leading up to her death, wanting to avoid any sort of family in-fighting over her estate after she had died.
Yet it appears the (Simply) The Best singer was also keen on planning various details of her own funeral, including a wish to upstage one of her greatest rivals.
Radar Online say that in the midst of struggling to deal with complications from a kidney transplant, Turner began to make preparations concerning how she would be laid to rest when the time came. What’s more, she was intent on ensuring her funeral would be bigger than Aretha Franklin’s.
Radar cite a source from 2018 as claiming: “They were heated rivals in life, and Tina’s not about to let Aretha upstage her in death!”
Turner and Franklin, both incredible performer in their own right, found themselves locked in a feud decades ago when rumors surfaced suggesting that Franklin had engaged in an affair with Turner’s husband at the time, Ike.
Franklin passed away in 2018, ten years after allegedly reacting badly to Beyonce referring to Turner as the “The Queen” at the 2008 Grammy Awards. Turner then quipped: “Her ego must be so big to think she was the only one!”
According to Radar, a source said: “They NEVER had a good relationship.” Meanwhile, another insider claimed Tina saw her “swan song as an opportunity to kick a little dirt on her rival’s grave.”
They added: “It will be Tina’s last and biggest show ever.”
Rest in peace, Tina Turner. You will be missed!
