Father’s Day can bring up a lot of mixed emotions for people.
For many it’s a day of celebration. For others it’s a day to mourn the father who is no longer in their life. And to some it’s a day to recognize those who stepped into the father role when they didn’t have one.
Carson Daly, co-host of Today, recently took time to reflect on the day and how he planned to honor the two important men in his life who are no longer with him.
“I think about both of them every day,” he said.
Daly said he plans to drive his late father’s 1977 Corvette on Father’s Day.
Jim “J.D.” Daly died from bladder cancer when Carson was only five years old.
Driving his father’s car will bring back memories of when he was a little boy because it was the same car the two would drive in when he was little.
“I don’t drive it that much anymore. But on Father’s Day, I’ll take it to go get coffee and I’ll think of my dad,” Carson said.
He also plans to listen to his J.D.’s favorite music, Eagles, Fleetwood Mac, and James Taylor, as he cruises along in the 1977 Corvette.
After going for a ride in his late father’s car, he plans to honor his stepfather by doing something the two of them bonded over: watching golf.
“My stepdad and I bonded over golf. It was our common denominator — and we would always watch the U.S. Open on Father’s Day,” he said. “So I’ll pour a beer in a frosted mug for me, and I’ll pour one for my dad.”
“I’ll pretend he’s still here. I remember that feeling of sitting there with him — and I’ll try and just tap into that. What else can you do?”
As for how his family plans to honor him on Father’s Day, he’s been told his four children will be preparing him a special breakfast.
Experiencing Father’s Day without the person you called your dad can be difficult, especially if it’s your first. But there are still ways you can honor the relationship you had with them.
