Talented actress Brooke Shields has famously had a long marriage with writer and producer, Chris Henchy, since 2001.
Though, not many people are aware that this is her second marriage.
In fact, Shields had wed another celebrity during the early 90s – former world number one tennis player, Andre Agassi. Shields, 58, and Agassi’s marriage lasted for six years, but their union was tumultuous to say the least.
Their relationship began in 1993 when they met at a tennis event, and sparks immediately flew. They went on their first date and ended up marrying in April, 1997, in California in front of 100 guests. By 1999, they had divorced.
In 2014, Shields released her memoir, ‘There Was a Little Girl’, where she lifted the lid on her rocky marriage with Agassi – and how his confession about being addicted to crystal meth.
She wrote: “He explained to me that for the first whole part of our relationship, he had been addicted to crystal meth.” Shields then continued by revealing that Agassi did now show any interest in having couples counseling and seemed uninterested in her support.
Shields expressed her feelings about their marriage in her memoir, labeling it “a mistake.” She recounted how their busy schedules kept them apart, with her working on her show, ‘Suddenly Susan,’ and him participating in various tennis tournaments.
According to her, the physical distance and emotional disconnect also eventually eroded their relationship. Though, it wasn’t just Agassi’s drug addiction that contributed to their split – he was also incredibly jealous.
During an interview with The New Yorker this year, Shields recounted how Agassi’s jealousy revealed itself after she filmed a cameo in the hit sitcom ‘Friends’ in 1996. After watching her appear on an episode entitled ‘The One After the Superbowl,’ – where Shields played an obsessed fan who licks Joey Tribbiani’s fingers – Agassi became infuriated.
“In the scene, I’m supposed to lick Joey’s fingers, because they’re the hands of a genius, and I want to devour them, and I’m a nut,” she explained to the outlet. Agassi reportedly stormed out, telling his then-future wife: “Everybody’s making fun of me. You made a fool of me by that behavior.”
Shields frankly admitted that she didn’t understand why his reaction was so severe, especially when her cameo was for comedic purposes. This incident was also documented in her 2014 memoir, where she wrote about how Agassi drove to Vegas in a fit of rage and smashed his tennis trophies.
In her recent documentary, ‘Pretty Baby: Brooke Shields,’ the actress discussed her former husband and the current state of their relationship, saying that she “never reconnected with him”.
Though, despite the challenges they faced when they were together, Shields noted: “That was an important stage and relationship in my life, and I don’t regret it. It afforded me a lot of space from my mother and gave me this belief in my own talent. That was one of the main beautiful purposes of the marriage.”
She added: “I don’t know if he does that much reflection on things. People process things very, very differently, and I have come to respect that.”
