A plumbing company from Baltimore, Maryland has caused quite the uproar after their employees answered a simple question: “What is one thing you should never put down your garbage disposal?”
Apparently, plumbers and those who use the kitchen appliance on a near-daily basis have very differing opinions.
Prime Plumbing posed the question to several of their employees, and their responses will definitely shock you, especially if you’re someone who uses their garbage disposal religiously.
After taking a beat to respond, the first plumber said they wouldn’t put “anything” down the disposal.
Sounds a bit dramatic, no?
Chicken bones, egg shells, and rice are also added to the “do not throw down the disposal” list.
In the comments of the video, TikTok users confessed to having thrown nearly every single thing down the garbage disposal. And in some cases they paid the price.
“My apt neighbor cleaned out her fridge and all of her food clogged our shared pipes and it started backing up into my kitchen and bathroom,” shared on user.
“Cucumber peels, old cooked nooodles, have learned the hard way,” wrote another.
Others shared the crazy things they’ve shoved down their garbage disposal.
“I watched my grandma throw a whole jersey mikes (sandwich) down the garbage disposal last week,” someone else wrote.
“I watched my grandma throw a whole jersey mikes (sandwich) down the garbage disposal last week,” another questioned.
Like many TikTok users, you’re probably wondering what is the point of a garbage disposal if not to discard just about everything.
According to Prime Plumbing, the handy kitchen appliance is meant to catch the residual food scraps that are leftover after you’ve dumped the larger pieces of food into the garbage can.
“The garbage disposal is just for the excess stuff you missed,” one of their plumbers explained. “It’s supposed to prevent your drain lines from clogging and food from building up, but you can’t do that if you dump all your leftovers in it.”
How do you use your garbage disposal? Let us know in the comments if you use it the correct way or if you dump everything down it and hope for the best!
