The second attempt at everlasting romance involving Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez has come to a disappointing end.
The writing may have been on the wall regarding their separation for a long time now, but it can be assumed there were many fans out there hoping that the two would reconcile, sort through their problems, and ride off into the sunset together as per the impression they gave after their Las Vegas wedding two years ago.
Alas, it was not to be. Last week JLo filed for divorce from Affleck at Los Angeles County Superior Court, bringing a resounding end to one of Hollywood’s power couples.
As stated, there’s been much and more made of ‘Bennifer’s breakdown over the past few months. When you’re a celebrity coupling consisting of two of the biggest superstars on the planet, it’s hardly surprising that your business is going to become fodder for the masses via gossip websites and eye-catching headlines, after all.
And so it has proven for the better half of 2024 so far, with Affleck and JLo’s ups and downs widely reported as the couple’s marriage slid towards an apparently inevitable end.
Not only had Affleck moved out of the couple’s lavish Beverley Hills mansion – and been snapped multiple times without his wedding ring – but Lopez canceled her tour of North America amidst the rumors, citing a need to spend time with her family.
It was last week that the hammer finally fell on Affleck and JLo’s union, after the former filed divorce papers in Los Angeles without the aid of a lawyer (suggesting she wants to handle proceedings herself).
Just why the couple couldn’t make it work is a subject of debate currently, with differing sources having put a number of different theories out there. One that seems to be sticking, however, is the idea that Affleck and Lopez were doomed to fail… all because they’re two contrasting people who have opposing designs on how they want to live their lives.
Readers will remember that the marriage was the second bite of the cherry as far as a romance between Affleck and JLo was concerned. The two A-listers became one of the most high-profile couplings of the early 00s before eventually calling quits on an engagement and going on to meet – and have children with – new partners.
Lopez, as her fans well know, thrives best in the spotlight, and her life is one that very much plays out in full view of the public whenever possible. The On The Floor singer often surrounds herself with large retinues and likes to ensure she’s a constant presence on social media and within the mainstream media.
Affleck, by contrast, is known to prefer a quieter life away from the flashing of cameras. To hear some sources tell it, the two conflicting lifestyles led to a disconnect between Affleck and JLo that soon took its toll on their marriage.
Not only that, but other reports have speculated that Affleck’s changing moods played a role in the breakdown of their union as well. The Gone Girl actor was said to have shifted quickly from loving and sensitive to distant, withdrawn and irritable, placing further stress on Lopez as she sought to navigate the uncertainty.
Ultimately, JLo opted for a very significant date on which to file the divorce papers. She submitted said papers to the Los Angeles County Superior Court on August 20, two years to the day that the couple tied the knot at a surprise ceremony in Las Vegas.
Naturally, Lopez’s timing of the divorce filing was not lost on those familiar with the couple’s history. Fans of the pair were quick to weigh-in on the matter online, and their opinions ranged from the supportive to the downright dismissive.
“Soooo sad…really breaks my heart. I think Ben may suffer from bipolar disorder or something…his mood swings aren’t normal. Still, JLo believes in love,” one person commented.
“I heard they were opposites. Ben does not like big entourages while JLo can’t seem to get enough of them,” said another.
“Really!!! Everything is Ben’s fault??? [sic]” wrote a third.
Another wrote: “I worry about him. Hope he doesn’t hurt himself.”
