Former First Lady Melania Trump has issued a shocking claim relating to the assassination attempt on her husband, Donald Trump.
The ex-POTUS was on stage at a campaign rally near Butler, Pennsylvania on July 13 when a gunman, later identified as 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks, opened fire, striking Trump’s ear and fatally wounding a man in the crowd behind him.
Trump remained characteristically unflappable in the aftermath of the attempt on his life, describing it as “incredible” that such a thing could have occurred.
“I was shot with a bullet that pierced the upper part of my right ear,” Trump wrote on his platform, Truth Social, after the assassination attempt.
“I knew immediately that something was wrong in that I heard a whizzing sound, shots, and immediately felt the bullet ripping through the skin.
“It is incredible that such an act can take place in our country.”
Crooks was shot dead by Secret Service agents seconds after opening fire at the rally, while Trump was quickly smothered and shielded by agents on stage before being whisked away for treatment.
Shocking as the entire affair was, Trump has appeared in public several times in the weeks since, seemingly unfazed by his brush with death. His wife Melania, however, has now made a bold claim about the shooting in a video shared on her Instagram page, alleging that there is “more to the story”.
“The attempt to end my husband’s life was a horrible, distressing experience,” she said in the clip, speaking directly to the camera.
“Now the silence around it feels heavy. I can’t help but wonder why didn’t law enforcement officials arrest shooter before the speech. There is definitely more to this story. And we need to uncover the truth.”
The video in question ended with an image promoting her upcoming memoir, Melania, set to be released in October.
Melania’s claim comes after further details concerning the assassination attempt on Trump emerged. US Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle described the event as ‘unacceptable’.
“The buck stops with me,” she told ABC. “I am the director of the Secret Service, and I need to make sure that we are performing a review and that we are giving resources to our personnel as necessary.”
