What’s the difference between a women’s XXL and a 2X?

I know I’m not alone when I say it’s frustrating going into one store and finding a pair of pants that fits only to shop at another store, pick out the same size, and discover you actually need one size bigger.

How can that be the case? Aren’t sizes universal? Nope. And just wait until you learn that there’s a difference between a women’s size XXL and 2X.

A plus-sized influencer shared the interesting tidbit with her followers on TikTok, and many were left stunned.

“WHAT. And this comes from someone who is plus size.”

Upon a quick glance there doesn’t seem to be anything different about the two sizes. Plus, logically speaking, doesn’t the “2” in the 2X mean it’s a double extra-large or XXL?

In one of her videos, Makayla Smith showed that albeit somewhat small, there is a difference. And for those who find themselves struggling to decide which one is their size, it comes down to comfort.

A retail worker chimed in with their knowledge, “xxl is still considered ‘straight sizing’ and basically just a larger size. 2X is made from a plus size pattern.”

Others were thankful that Smith pointed out the discrepancy between the two sizes, something many retailers fail to acknowledge.

“h&m thinks they are,” one person wrote.

“This is probably why nothing fits me when I buy from fashion nova,” someone else added.

In women’s clothing, a double extra large is considered an extended size, while a 2X is considered a plus size. Extended sizes are made based off of straight sizes–XXS, XS, XL, or 0-18.

On the other hand, plus sizes are made using a different pattern. Typically the patterns accommodate different hip-to-waist ratios and a fuller bust. The proportions also tend to change as the size increases.

As with most clothing, sizing tends to differ from brand to brand, but the general rule is plus sizes range from 0X to 4X or 14W to 30W. Select brands also offer extended sizes up to 6X.
