The devastating loss of Miller Gardner, the 14-year-old son of former New York Yankees star Brett Gardner, has left many searching for answers.
Miller passed away on March 21 while vacationing with his family in Costa Rica, but the circumstances surrounding his death remain unclear.
But in a chilling new development, Costa Rican authorities have revealed a possible cause.
Many questions remain
The heartbreaking loss of Miller Gardner, the 14-year-old son of former Yankees star Brett Gardner, has left his family and loved ones in shock. Miller passed away in his sleep while on vacation, a tragedy no parent should ever have to face.
The Gardners were staying at Arenas Del Mar Beachfront & Rainforest Resort, a luxury resort located along Costa Rica’s Pacific coast, about 50 miles south of San José.
In a statement, his parents shared that Miller and several family members had gotten sick during the trip, but they didn’t go into detail about who else was affected, what illness they had, or what symptoms they experienced.
As they grieve, many questions remain, but one thing is clear — Miller’s passing has left an unimaginable void.

“With heavy hearts, we are saddened to announce the passing of our youngest son, Miller. He was 14 years old and has left us far too soon after falling ill along with several other family members while on vacation,” the teen’s parents said.
“We have so many questions and so few answers at this point, but we do know that he passed away peacefully in his sleep on the morning of Friday, March 21st.”
Several explanations and reasons have been presented in recent days in an attempt to clarify the young boy’s death. One report mentioned that Miller died from asphyxiation and local investigators suggested that the teen’s death might have been caused by ”possible intoxication after seemingly ingesting some food”.
Juan Pablo Alvarado, an official from Costa Rica’s Judicial Investigative Agency, stated that the preliminary cause of death has not yet been confirmed through autopsy and toxicology tests.

However, according to the Daily Mail, new information has surfaced suggesting that the boy might never have “stood a chance.” Costa Rican authorities now believe that the son of Yankees champion Brett Gardner may have suffered a severe reaction to medication, which could have played a key role in his tragic death.
While Costa Rica’s Judicial Investigation Police (OIJ) attributed Miller’s death to “asphyxiation due to intoxication related to food poisoning,” investigators later informed CNN that asphyxia had been ruled out, as there was no obstruction in the teen’s airway.
New theory
Authorities are now investigating whether Miller was allergic to any medication he had been given, according to ABC News.
The family is still searching for answers, as it’s believed the autopsy could take two to three months to be completed. Police from the nearby town of Quepos have taken over the investigation and have begun questioning resort employees.
Miller and his family were staying at a beachfront resort costing $900 per night when he was discovered dead on Friday morning.
Earlier on Tuesday, the Arenas Del Mar resort expressed its deep sorrow to DailyMail.com, stating, ”Our hearts go out to the family during this incredibly difficult time. The factors that led to this tragic incident are unknown, and we are fully cooperating with authorities as they investigate. We remain committed to supporting our guests and staff, prioritizing their well-being and safety, while respecting the privacy of those affected.”
Miller’s father, Brett, was an outfielder who spent the entirety of his 14-year Major League Baseball career with the Yankees. The 41-year-old played his last game in 2021 and had been using his retirement to spend more time with his family in South Carolina.

The Yankees offered their support for Gardner in a statement.
“Our hearts are heavy, and the Yankees family is filled with grief after learning of the passing of Miller Gardner,” the team said. “Words feel insignificant and insufficient in trying to describe such an unimaginable loss. It wasn’t just Brett who literally grew up in this organization for more than 17 years — so did his wife, Jessica, and their two boys, Hunter and Miller.”
“We grieve with Brett, Jessica, Hunter, and their community of family and friends in mourning the loss of Miller, who had a spark in his eyes, an outgoing and feisty personality, and a warm and loving nature.
“Our love for the Gardner family is unconditional and absolute, and we will offer our enduring support while understanding their desire for privacy at this time.
“May Miller rest in peace.”
