Woman says “death is an illusion” after being ‘separated’ from her physical body

A woman who was clinically dead for eight minutes has described an extraordinary near-death experience that she says changed everything she believed about life, and what comes after.

Brianna Lafferty, 33, had long been battling myoclonus dystonia, a rare neurological disorder that causes sudden muscle jerks and debilitating fatigue. After years of worsening symptoms and failed treatments, she says her body finally “gave up.”

What happened next, she says, was not the end, but a beginning.

Brianna recalls her soul “floating” above her body before entering a space where time didn’t exist. She heard a voice ask if she was ready. She said yes.

“I was suddenly separated from my physical body,” Brianna said, per The Mirror. “I didn’t see or remember my human self. I was completely still, yet I felt more alive and more me than ever before.”

She describes entering complete darkness, but not fear: “There was no pain. Just deep peace and clarity. It made me realize how temporary and fragile our human experience really is.”

In that place, she says, she came to understand that death is an illusion. “Our soul never dies. Our consciousness continues. We don’t end, we transform,” she explained in a YouTube interview. “Our thoughts instantly manifest. We create our reality, and that includes changing negativity into something positive.”

Brianna said the experience gave her a new sense of trust and purpose. Looking back on her years of illness and pain, she now believes every hardship had a reason. “There’s this knowledge that everything really does happen for a reason,” she said. “I don’t get angry or upset the way I used to. I just flow with it now.”

During her near-death state, she also encountered what she described as other beings, not necessarily human, but familiar. She felt a sense of unconditional love and divine order. Time, as she knew it, didn’t exist.

“Everything happened at once, but somehow made perfect sense. I felt like I had witnessed the beginning of everything, and realized the universe is made up of numbers,” she said.

When she returned to her body, she says it felt as though she’d been gone for months. She spent four days in the hospital recovering – physically, emotionally, and spiritually.

While she admits there’s fear in the idea of going through such an experience again, it’s no longer fear of death itself: “The recovery was brutal, but the experience gave me a heart full of gratitude. I’m no longer angry. I understand that I’m here for a reason.”

Today, Brianna uses her experience to support others dealing with chronic illness, spiritual crises, or end-of-life fears.“I believe we choose difficult experiences for our soul’s growth. Even the painful, terrifying moments. There’s something in those experiences that the soul can’t find in the spiritual realm. It’s how we grow.”

And as for death? “I’m not afraid of it anymore,” she says. “It’s just a doorway.”
