Celebrity chef Anne Burrell’s death is being investigated as a possible drug overdose, according to a law enforcement official.
We reported last week how the beloved cook – co-host of Food Network’s “Worst Cooks in America” – was found dead in her home in New York on Tuesday, June 17.
Having been discovered lifeless in her shower by her husband, Stuart Claxton, Burrell was attended by emergency responders. Sadly, however, they were unable to revive her, and the 55-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene.
New information released by officials over the weekend claims that Burrell was found surrounded by approximately 100 assorted pills. Her sudden passing is being investigated as a possible drug overdose.
At the time of writing, her cause of death is still pending.
Her family shared a heartfelt tribute late last week reading: “Anne was a beloved wife, sister, daughter, stepmother, and friend — her smile lit up every room she entered. Anne’s light radiated far beyond those she knew, touching millions across the world. Though she is no longer with us, her warmth, spirit, and boundless love remain eternal.”

Food Network also honored the late chef in a separate statement.
“Anne was a remarkable person and culinary talent — teaching, competing and always sharing the importance of food in her life and the joy that a delicious meal can bring,” the network stated. “Our thoughts are with Anne’s family, friends and fans during this time of tremendous loss.”
The night prior to her death, Burrell performed improv at a Brooklyn venue and was last seen “in great spirits” around 1 that morning, according to a witness.
“Everyone said she was so great last night and so happy,” a source shared with People.
Another source who was with her at the show confirmed, “She was in great spirits last night during and after the improv show. Typical fun, outgoing Anne, having a blast.”
The source added that everyone is still “shocked and confused” because Anne seemed perfectly fine when the event ended.
The New York Post report that the TV chef suffered cardiac arrest, though sources told the publication that it is too early to know if the pills discovered close to her body played any role in her demise.
Authorities, it’s said, don’t suspect foul play at this time.
Rest in peace, Anne Burrell.
