‘Cocaine clause’ may bring Keith Urban millions in Nicole Kidman divorce

Nicole Kidman’s split from Keith Urban has uncovered a shocking secret: a “cocaine clause” buried in their prenup that may leave the country star millions richer.

Nicole Kidman, 58, and Keith Urban, 57, were once seen as one of Hollywood’s most unshakable power couples, tying the knot in June 2006 after a whirlwind romance.

But the early days of their union were far from easy. Just months into the marriage, the Big Little Lies star staged a dramatic intervention that changed the course of their relationship forever.

Urban, then struggling with drug and alcohol addiction, later admitted it was a turning point.

“[Kidman] made a decision to turn around and initiate ultimately this intervention. It was done in such a way that the love in that room at that moment was just right. I was like, ‘Put the cuffs on, let’s go,’” he told Oprah Winfrey in 2010.

Urban spent three months in rehab at the Betty Ford Center and has since credited Kidman for standing by him during his darkest period.

‘Very, very, very bad, painful place’

Kidman herself reflected on that time with characteristic candor: “I’ve learned an enormous amount having a relationship with someone who is in recovery. I’m more than willing to walk it with him. The two of us are very committed to our relationship,” the American-Aussie actor told Vanity Fair. “We were in a very, very, very bad, painful place, and have managed to step through it.

“And that’s enough said. Anything else is overindulgent and unnecessary right now. And I think it jinxes it, in a way, and that’s why I don’t go on about my enormous feelings for this man.”

‘Blew our marriage to smithereens’

For years, the couple seemed stronger than ever. The “Somebody Like You” singer often praised his wife publicly, including in an emotional tribute at the AFI Life Achievement Award Gala in 2024.

“We got married in June 2006 and barely four months into our marriage, my addictions that I’d done really nothing about, blew our marriage to smithereens,” the country crooner said onstage, per the New York Post. “Four months into a marriage, I’m in rehab for three months. I had no idea what was going to happen to us. And if you want to see what love in action really looks like, give that a whirl.”

He credited the Babygirl star with choosing love when it mattered most, saying, “Nic pushed through every negative voice, I’m sure even some of her own and she chose love,” Urban added. “And here we are tonight, 18 years later.”

Drifted apart

But behind the glamorous red-carpet appearances and heartfelt speeches, cracks began to show.

Insiders say the couple started drifting apart following the death of Kidman’s mother in 2024, with the pair reportedly spending less and less time together in the months that followed.

“They do make a big effort to speak every day when they’re apart, but it’s quite shocking how much time they’ve spent apart since Nic’s mother died (last) September,” one insider told Radar Online. “It’s like they both went their separate ways and now she’s getting comfortable in a dream home in London on the other side of the world.”

According to Woman’s Day, Kidman based herself in London, where she’s renting a Hampstead home owned by pop star Boy George, while filming the Practical Magic sequel.

The Grammy-winning singer, meanwhile, continued touring internationally, often away from both his wife and their two daughters, Sunday Rose, 17, and Faith Margaret, 14.

“No one knows how long they can put up with this situation as they’ve always been diligent about not spending more than two weeks apart,” a source told the outlet. “Clearly that’s not the case anymore.”

Divorce filed

On Sept. 30, the unraveling became official. Kidman filed for divorce, citing “marital difficulties and irreconcilable differences,” according to the Marital Dissolution Agreement obtained by People.

The documents revealed that it was Kidman who initiated proceedings but did not elaborate further on the reasons behind the split.

‘Cocaine clause’

And yet, the real twist wasn’t the divorce itself – but what was buried in the prenup. According to Radar Online, the document includes a “cocaine clause” – a provision that entitles Urban to $600,000 for every year of marriage, provided he remained sober.

Over 19 years, that could mean a payout of more than $11 million.

The clause, legal experts say, was both a legal safeguard for Kidman and a powerful financial incentive for Urban to maintain his sobriety.

Legal sources suggest such clauses, while rare, are enforceable – especially when one spouse enters the marriage with a history of substance abuse.

What began as a love story built on resilience and recovery has ended with headlines about the shocking “cocaine clause” – a rare prenuptial provision that could leave Urban millions richer.
