More people are identifying as ‘Neptunic’ sexuality – here’s what it actually means

If you’re one of our regular readers here at Newsner, you may have noticed a recent trend with regards to articles taking a closer look at terms used to describe sexual attraction and identification.

Last week we took a look at terms like ‘berrisexual‘ and ‘digisexual‘, whereas we’ve covered other classifications such as ‘almondsexual’, ‘graysexual’, and ‘demisexual’ in previous months.

With the general conversation around gender and sexuality having risen to prominence in recent years, it makes sense that a whole lot of new terms are entering the mainstream sphere.

Long gone are the days when knowing the definitions of bisexuality and transexuality meant you were progressive – today there are any number of words used to better describe how people feel and identify. Some of them are extremely specific, catering to those individuals who experience a more niche sense of their own sexuality and attraction. Others are broader terms, applicable to a wide group of people.

‘Neptunic’ is one of them that we weren’t familiar with.

As per reports, the term refers to people who are attracted exclusively to neutral non-binary individuals, feminine-aligned non-binary people, and women. It can also be referred to as nomascsexual.

Now, I’m well aware the above paragraph might not make any sense to some during a first pass. Indeed, even after you’ve read it three times it might come across as overly complicated or convoluted.

Put into layman’s terms: neptunic people are not attracted to men or masculine-aligned non-binary individuals.

Neptunic is just one of several identity labels created to aid non-binary people in their attempts to define their attraction in a more precise way.

Other, similar, terms include (but are not limited to) Uranic – that is attraction to neutral non-binary, masculine non-binary, and male genders – Lunarian – non-binary individuals who are female-aligned or identify as female – Venusic – non-binary people attracted to lunarians, women, and women-aligned genders – and Stellarian – neutral-aligned people who don’t identify as masculine or feminine but still experience a sense of gender.

The history of the term ‘neptunic’ can reportedly be traced back to Tumblr. On August 31, 2017 a user there coined “neptunic” as a shorter version of ‘nomascsexual’. They emphasized that the label is not exclusive to non-binary people – but rather it’s open to anyone who finds it helpful.

You could be be neptunic if you’re drawn to: neutral non-binary people, women, and feminine-leaning non-binary people.

We’ll be the first to admit it can be difficult to keep up with the plethora of new terms flying around, but at least making an effort to stay up to date is likely to be appreciated by anyone you come across.

To this end, we’ll continue to do our best to keep readers informed!
