10-year-old labrador adopts 9 ducklings after their mom is killed by a fox

Nine little duckings in Mountfichet, England, were sadly orphaned when their mother died.

Then labrador Fred entered their lives and today he’s their adoptive dad!

According to Mountfitchet Castle boss, Jeremy Goldsmith, “they absolutely love him.” He spoke to British newspaper the Daily Mail on the bizarre friendship that’s been struck, and how the dog has inadvertently become a stay-at-home dad as a result.

On Thursday, staff working at Mountfitchet Castle in Stanstead, Essex, saw something rather out of the ordinary.

Nine young ducklings were wandering around – seemingly confused. The staff at the popular English tourist destination knew that their mother was in the area, but they found no trace of her after conducting a search. The director of the castle told the Daily Mail: “‘We knew the mother duck was nesting and then suddenly these ducklings appeared but she was nowhere to be seen.

“We think it was possibly a fox.”

Instead, 10-year-old veteran Fred entered their lives. He’s now become their adoptive father.

“Fred has got an absolutely wonderful nature. They absolutely love him,” Jeremy explains.

That’s a statement we can certainly believe. Just look at the pictures above and below. Fred, you’re a true hero!
