iPhone user shocked to discover “ridiculous” hidden feature in new clock app

There are hundreds of thousands of apps you can download to your iPhone. However, some, including the clock app, is already there. Now, social media users and iPhone owners have once again proved just how sharp-eyed Apple’s technology can be. This time, they have spotted a surprising detail hiding in plain sight inside Apple’s clock app that has sparked lively debate online.

It all started when a tech enthusiast on X, Shishir, shared something unusual they’d noticed on their iPhone. At first glance, the clock icon on the home screen looked the same as ever — familiar and functional. But one small change caught their eye.

“Wait… the Clock icon on iOS ticks like quartz watch in low power mode and mechanical in normal mode??? That’s ridiculous attention to detail,” Shishir wrote on X.

They were referring to how the second hand of the Clock app behaves differently depending on the iPhone’s power setting. When the device is running normally, the hand glides smoothly around the face, much like a traditional mechanical watch.

When you turn on Low Power Mode, the movement changes: the hand moves forward one second at a time, like the tick-tick of a quartz watch.

Some fans were genuinely impressed, praising Apple’s detail-oriented design and how it captures the look of a real-world watch.

However, is that the whole truth behind it? Other users online weren’t so sure this was a “secret Easter egg.” Instead, they pointed to a more technical explanation.

“It’s not an attention to detail, it’s an easy point to save battery! When you animate the entire flow, that is more pixels having to turn on and off. When you cut each second, the pixels are doing less, saving battery life.”

Another added: “I think it’s merely due to the refresh rate of the always-on screen that goes down to 1/s.”

Meanwhile, a third person claimed a similar theory, saying, “It’s probably not attention to detail but rather saving some battery by processing lesser frames.”

Apple has long explained that Low Power Mode changes how the system operates to help the battery last longer. It reduces background activity and lowers performance when needed.

So, the animation change may not be a hidden design choice. It is more likely a smart tech trick to make the screen and processor do less work when the battery is low. Still, many users like this small change. No matter the reason, it’s no understatement that with Apple products, even tiny details often spark big online discussions.
