He was the ultimate heartthrob of the 1980s and 1990s with his fancy hair, muscular body, and intense gaze. But after the romance novel covers, Fabio Lanzoni disappeared. Here’s what happened.
In the late 1980s and 1990s, one man became the dream of many women around the world. His long hair, strong face, and muscular body appeared on many romance novel covers.
Women imagined him as the perfect hero in love stories. But the surprising thing is that the man did not even know he was famous at first.
That man was Fabio Lanzoni. His face was everywhere — on books in stores, supermarkets, and people’s homes. Readers looked at the covers and imagined exciting love stories before they even started reading the book.
For about a year and a half, Fabio worked as a model in photo shoots. But he did not know the pictures were being used on romance books. However, one night in Miami changed everything.
“Three girls come up to me, and they go, ‘Oh my God. You look exactly like the guy on our books.'” Fabio said on People Magazine’s podcast People’s in the 90’s.

At first, Fabio thought they were flirting with him. He joked and replied:
“Honey, that’s a great pick-up line,” Fabio replied, but the women were serious.
They continued, “No, no. Trust me, it’s no pick-up line. You’re like exactly like the guy on my books.”
Fabio Lanzoni was confused. He said he had no idea what they meant. He thought the photos were just normal pictures and did not know where they were used.
One of the women decided to prove it.
“I live about 20 minutes from the club. I’m going to go home, pick up all my books, and I’m going to come back and show you, I’m not lying to you,” one woman said.
She later returned with the books, and Fabio was in shock. After looking at the covers in disbelief, he uttered,” Oh my God, that’s me.
He realized he had become a famous person. His face was on the covers of romance novels, and it became his life’s work.
Big break in America
Born on March 15, 1959, in Milano, Italy, Fabio Lanzoni worked as a fashion model in Europe. He also served in the Italian army, but the fact that he was pursuing a career in modeling didn’t go down well with everyone at home.
His father didn’t support his modeling career, telling him, “You don’t want to be a mannequin.
But Fabio was destined to go his own way in life. He continued modeling and decided to move to the US to make it big. He became a regular in the modeling industry and, in 1993, appeared on the cover of People Magazine.
At that point, his father had changed his mind about his son’s career choice.
“For the first time in my life, my father said to me, ‘Fabio, I’m wrong.’ My father was never wrong, so I couldn’t believe when he said, ‘You really made it, I’m very proud of you. I was wrong and you were right.’ He said, ‘I’m so proud of you. You made it.’ That was to me, it was the best reward,” Fabio Lanzoni told People in 2024.
Besides the modeling work, novel covers were a huge part of his living. Fabio appeared on more than 1,300 romance novel covers, which made him one of the most, if not the most, famous faces in the industry.

So why did they become so popular? The model himself has an idea.
“When you read the book, you really have your own fantasy,” he said. “Worldwide, you have so many women who are not happy with their relationship, not happy with their life. They want to escape their reality, and this is their escape.”
Fabio’s fame also led him into another industry: movies. He appeared in films such as Dude, Where’s My Car?, Spy Hard, and Death Becomes Her, as well as on shows like Step by Step and Guiding Light. He often played himself.
To this day, Fabio’s name is plastered across the internet. And users on social media can’t let his good looks go.
“Man, this guy seems respectful, well-grounded, down-to-earth, genuine nice guy,” one person wrote in a YouTube comment.
“Can’t believe he’s still big and has the same hair,” a second added.
Others praised his looks, saying it’s still amazing.
“He still looks good for his age,” one user wrote, with another gushing, “Wow, still fine. Love his voice.”
While many have praised Fabio Lanzoni for his looks today, aging is inevitable. Therefore, sadly, some weren’t that overly excited about how he looks today.

“What looked good when he was young is not cute anymore…sorry, hair would look better shorter,” one person wrote.
A second added, “The long hair isn’t attractive anymore, but if he likes it, it’s his head,” and a third commented, “I don’t see the attraction that people talk about.”
So what is Fabio doing today? The 66-year-old is living a quiet life, focusing on staying healthy and working out. He has also gone through heartbreak as his sister passed away from cancer, which has made him a huge supporter of cancer research.
“I have the most beautiful life, I am healthy, I am in good shape, I eat well, I work out every day,” he said in 2025
While he hasn’t been married, the model has previously admitted that some he loved ‘got away.’
“There is quantity, but I want quality,” Fabio concluded. “You see, when you really love a person, it’s forever.”
