Holland Taylor, 83, reveals the real reason she and Sarah Paulson, 51, live apart after 12 years together

Holland Taylor and Sarah Paulson have found a relationship arrangement that works for them, even if it goes against what many people expect from a long-term couple.

During an appearance on The Drew Barrymore Show, Taylor opened up about how she and Paulson, 51, manage their living arrangements while balancing their professional commitments.

“Well we do as much time as we possibly can, because work takes us apart constantly,” she said according to VT.

“But I have an apartment here [in New York City], and [Paulson] stays here in my apartment when she’s here.”

The couple maintains separate residences in Los Angeles, too, although their arrangement has recently looked a little different.

“In LA, I have a separate house from hers, but her new house, she hasn’t moved into.

“It’s been almost a year since she’s been staying in my house in LA, too. So we’re together as much as geography and our jobs let us be.”

Taylor and Paulson’s story began when they met in 2005. However, romance didn’t enter the picture until early 2015, and they publicly confirmed their relationship in March 2016.

During a 2024 appearance on the SmartLess podcast, Paulson spoke about their decision to live apart.

“Yeah, we don’t live together. That’s the secret to it. We spend plenty of time together, but we don’t live in the same house.

“[We’ve] been together for a long time now. And part of it has to do with, we’re together when we want to be and we’re not when we don’t.”

While Paulson had lived with previous partners, she explained that Taylor had less experience with it.

“So to get to be her age and sort of not having really cohabited with someone for a long time — I think it was a lot to sort of have me and all my me-ness in her space.”

When the possibility of sharing a house while sleeping in separate bedrooms was raised, however, Paulson made it clear that”s not an option.

“No, because my favourite thing to do — we fall asleep holding hands. I like to sleep near her,” she said.
