A woman has vowed she is “never going back” to a Starbucks location after the barista scribbled a “secret message” on the side of her coffee cup.
Writing little notes on cups has become common in coffee shops, especially across North America, where baristas often try to brighten someone’s day with a quick message.
Usually, it’s something simple like wishing a customer a good morning or reminding them to smile.
Others, however are more creative with messages like, “thanks a LATTE!” “thank you SOY much!” “have a BREW-tiful day!” or “WATER we’d do without you?!”
Most people see these small gestures as a friendly extra that makes a routine coffee run feel a bit more personal.
But in this case, the attempt at creativity had the opposite effect, leaving one customer feeling more embarrassed than charmed.
‘Extremely hot’
The situation drew attention after identical twin sisters Ari and Noe Chance shared a TikTok video showing one of them holding up a Starbucks cup with “secret message” scribbled across the top and an arrow pointing toward the printed hot drink warning below.
Normally, the text warns customers: “Careful, the beverage you’re about to enjoy is extremely hot.”
However, the barista had crossed out several of the words, changing the meaning so that the sentence read: “Careful, you’re extremely hot.”
The unexpected note appeared to leave the Canadian woman more uncomfortable than flattered, and she reacted to the moment by writing: “What just happened at Starbucks? Never going back there.”
‘That was smooth’
The video, originally shared in 2022, quickly gained traction and has since received more than 16.1 million views.
Some viewers found the message funny, saying the unexpected twist on the cup warning made the moment memorable and lighthearted, while others suggested it was “rude.”
“That was smooth [though] not gonna lie,” shared one TikToker, while a second wrote, “It’s cute, girls say guys never do anything. He just put his heart out to you.”
A third said, “This is why guys stopped asking girls out. Someone attempted to ‘shoot their shot’ and you put them on blast on TikTok and said you are not going back.”
Another added, “That is rude who did that, but that person is not wrong – you’re beautiful.”
‘Cheapest tricks for 2 million views’
Others were more skeptical and questioned whether the barista wrote the message, suggesting the moment was staged for social media attention.
“The quest for clout is never ending,” shared one netizen, while a second wrote, “She definitely wrote that herself.”
A third added, “one of the cheapest tricks for 2 million views.”
The skepticism also led to more sarcastic remarks: “Now spill it on yourself and sue,” wrote one TikToker, while a second quipped, “Spill it in yourself and sue Starbucks [because] the safety info was blocked.”
