Noelia Castillo Ramos has become the first person in Spain to undergo euthanasia following a prolonged legal battle. At the very last minute, her friend showed up at the hospital hoping to stop the procedure.
Noelia Castillo Ramos’s case has drawn widespread attention, not only for its legal implications but for the deeply personal story behind it.
In March 2021, Spanish lawmakers legalized voluntary euthanasia and assisted death, allowing a doctor to administer a lethal injection to patients who qualify. According to reports, Noelia Castillo Ramos was approved to medically end her life in 2024. But her heartbreaking story began years before that.
Back in 2022, Noelia was living in a state-run facility for vulnerable young people when she became the victim of a violent assault involving multiple perpetrators. The incident left her with severe psychological trauma. In the aftermath, she attempted to end her life by jumping from a building.
Euthanasia and assisted dying
She survived but sustained a serious spinal cord injury that left her paralyzed from the waist down. As time went on, both her physical and mental health continued to decline, according to LADBible.
She suffered from depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and borderline personality disorder. In 2024, authorities in Catalonia approved her request for assisted dying. Despite strong opposition from those closest to her, including family members and friends, Noelia remained firm in her decision. She chose to pursue her right to die through a lengthy legal process.
Speaking to Spain’s Antena 3, she explained her reasoning: “None of my family is in favour of euthanasia,” she said. “But I think, all the pain I’ve suffered over the years… I just want to leave in peace now and stop suffering, period.”
She added: “And a father’s, or a mother’s, or a sister’s happiness doesn’t have to come before a daughter’s happiness or sadness of a daughter’s life.”
Her final moments
Reports also state that a close friend made a last-minute attempt to stop the procedure in its final stages. Noelia’s childhood friend Carla Rodriguez came to the hospital hoping to change her friend’s mind but was blocked by security.
“I wanted to try to convince her to change her mind,” Rodriguez reportedly told reporters outside the hospital, according to Okdiario.
They became friends in school but had lost touch after Noelia was transferred to a different care facility. “Noelia has been through so much,” Rodriguez said while breaking down in tears, according to LADBible.
Noelia’s father, Geronimo Castillo, also tried to stop the process, insisting that his daughter was not able to make an informed decision about her life. In the end, her family was by her side. Noelia’s mother, Yolanda Ramos, stayed with her through the night at Sant Camil Hospital. Her father, along with other family members, also came to the hospital to be with her in her final hours. The procedure began around 6:30 p.m. local time and reportedly lasted only minutes.
