Dave Lancaster knew something had to change. A call center manager weighing almost 500 pounds and enduring multiple health problems as a result of his size, he was well aware things couldn’t continue as they were.
The problem was that he’d tried to diet before. The idea of losing weight wasn’t alien to him, only he had no idea how to actually go about it. His previous attempts had all ended in failure.
Dave suffered from high blood pressure and high cholesterol, as well as living with type 2 diabetes, gout and apnea. Being that they were all caused by his unhealthy living style, he decided to make a radical change. Even he would have been hard pressed to predict the transformation that would follow…
“I found it difficult to walk to the end of my road,” Dave said, as per the Daily Mail.
“I went out so rarely except for work that I was close to becoming a recluse, and I was nearing almost complete immobility. It felt as though as I was getting bigger and bigger, my world was gradually shrinking.”
After putting up with things for so long, Dave decided it was time to give weight loss another crack. He joined a local Slimming World group and soon realized that he weighed even more than he had thought. Tipping the scales at 480 pounds, his weigh-in was the final wake-up call he needed.
So, Dave learned how to properly cook for himself. He found that he could still enjoy plenty of his favorite foods, he only needed to ensure he was making them healthier at his home.
Gradually, he began to start walking every day in an effort to shed the excess pounds. This, combined with eating plenty of fresh fruits, vegetables and lean meats, had a marked effect on his objective.

“When I first started walking around the park I actually called it bench-pressing,” he said. “The park that I started going to was quite good because it had a lot of benches and as you walked around it you could take regular breaks and in all honesty that was what made it possible.”
According to the Daily Mail, Dave, 45, has walked around 6,000 miles since joining Slimming World. He now covers around 10 miles a day.
“I like this form of exercise because instead of costing me, like a gym membership or exercise class would, it saves me money on gas,” he said. “Now instead of meeting friends at my house, they join me for a walk!”
All told, Dave has lost over 280 pounds as a result of his hard work. He no longer has type 2 diabetes and instead can look to the future with fierce optimism. Having been named Slimming World’s Man of the Year, the only way is up.
