Body of girl, 5, swept out to sea in California is found

The heartbreaking search along the Southern California coast came to a tragic end this week after authorities recovered the body of five-year-old Amada Mia Brown, who was swept out to sea by a powerful wave at Laguna Beach. The young girl was walking along Treasure Island Beach with her mother and brother when rough surf pulled all three into the ocean.

Bystanders managed to rescue the mother and brother, but Amada disappeared beneath the waves, triggering a massive search operation involving lifeguards, the Coast Guard, boats, divers and aircraft. After nearly 30 hours of searching across more than 90 square miles of ocean, officials located her body roughly a quarter of a mile from where she was swept away.

Ex-South Korean president sentenced to 30 years in jail over drone plot

South Korea’s political turmoil deepened this week after former president Yoon Suk Yeol was sentenced to 30 years in prison over a controversial 2024 drone operation targeting North Korea. A Seoul court ruled that Yoon authorised military drones to fly over Pyongyang in an attempt to heighten tensions with the North and create a pretext for his later declaration of martial law.

Judges found him guilty of abuse of power and aiding an enemy, describing the operation as a misuse of state military resources for political purposes. Yoon has denied wrongdoing and is expected to appeal, arguing that the drone flights were a legitimate response to North Korean provocations rather than part of a broader political plot.

Huge ‘8647’ etched into National Mall grass

Federal authorities are investigating after the numbers “8647” were discovered etched into the grass of Washington’s National Mall near the World War II Memorial. Visible mainly from above, the massive marking appears to have been created by causing sections of grass to turn brown. U.S. Park Police have collected samples from the site and launched an investigation to determine how the message was made and who was responsible.

The incident has drawn national attention because “8647” is a slogan sometimes used by opponents of President Donald Trump, with “86” commonly meaning “to get rid of” and “47” referring to Trump as the 47th president.
