The horrifying conditions investigators say 16 children endured inside an Ohio home have become even more difficult to comprehend after a local news station recreated the tiny space where they were allegedly forced to spend much of their lives.
According to authorities, the children, ranging in age from 18 months to 18 years old, were allegedly kept for much of the past four years inside a single 12-by-12-foot room in a Vinton County home-
Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost said the case is among the most disturbing child endangerment investigations the state has ever seen.
“I can tell you this… this is pure evil what we saw down here,” Yost said.
Describing what he witnessed during a visit to the property, he added: “I cannot get the smell off.”
Ohio “house of horrors”
Officials described the conditions inside the home as “deplorable.”
“For 16 bodies to occupy that small of a space… it appears that they would have been in the room quite a bit. The filth… it redefined it for me,” one investigator said.
To help illustrate just how little space 16 people would have had, ABC 6 first created an AI-generated visualization before carrying out a real-life experiment. Instead of using children, the station recruited 16 adult volunteers and asked them to stand together inside a room with the same dimensions.
The reaction was almost immediate.
“Definitely not any personal space,” one volunteer said, according to VT.
Another added: “When I first walked in, the room seemed much larger than it was. As we continued to stand in the room… it was difficult to move around.”
As participants shifted around trying to make room for one another, someone suggested: “Feel like we should try to sit down.”
But even simple movements proved difficult.
“It got stuffy. It got crowded. We didn’t know what to do with our arms and we were all trying to just really be in the space,” one volunteer recalled, adding that it wasn’t long before everyone was asking: “‘Can we come out yet?’”
“It’s really upsetting”
The exercise also took an emotional toll on those taking part as they imagined children living under those alleged conditions for years.
“It’s really upsetting to think about this is just all they knew,” one participant said.
Another volunteer, who is a mother, struggled to hold back tears when asked to picture children growing up in such an environment.
“I couldn’t imagine… I’m sorry. I could not imagine,” she said.
Holding back tears, she continued: “I know that that’s all they know and there’s such a pureness sometimes with kids that they just adapt and just… exist in the environment that they’re in. You know, it breaks my heart truly that someone had to endure this. They spent a lifetime in there.”
Psychologist on what the children endured
Family psychologist Dr. David Lowenstein told ABC 6 that the children, who have since been removed from the home and placed in state care, now face what is likely to be a lengthy recovery.
“They’re going to find out that wasn’t the norm,” Lowenstein explained, according to VT. “Part of why these kids didn’t say anything is they thought all the houses had 16 kids in them.”
He described the alleged abuse as “a major trauma,” adding: “Short of death, this is as close as you can get.”
Looking back on the recreation, one volunteer said the experience stressed the unimaginable reality investigators say the children lived through.
“It’s really heartbreaking to me… I just feel so much for those children and what they went through. It’s unimaginable. It’s inhumane.”
